The Yellow Emperor discussed the treatment of edema using acupuncture and moxibustion, involving fifty-seven acupoints. Above the sacrum, there are five rows, each containing five points, known as the fifty-seven kidney points. This is where yin qi accumulates and serves as the pathway for the entry and exit of water fluids. These points above the sacrum, arranged in five rows of five, belong to the kidney meridians. Therefore, water diseases manifest below as swelling of the lower limbs and abdominal distension, and above as wheezing, gasping, and inability to lie flat. This occurs because both the root (kidney) and branch (lung) are diseased; thus, the lung causes wheezing and gasping, while the kidney causes edema, and lung qi rebellion causes the inability to lie flat. If the lung and kidney are considered as mutually transmitting and jointly affected, this is due to the retention of water qi. Above the Futu (ST32) point, there are two rows on each side, each with five points; these constitute the "street" of the kidney meridian, where the three yin meridians intersect and connect at the feet. Above each ankle, there is one row of six points; this is the downward path of the kidney meridian, named Taichong (KI3). All fifty-seven points are the yin collaterals of the zang organs, where water qi resides. For symptoms such as body swelling, rapid breathing, inability to lie flat, wind-induced sweating, generalized edema, wheezing, and excessive salivation, Tianfu (LU3) is indicated.
For swelling of the four limbs and dampness of the body, Fenglong (ST40) is indicated.
For wind rebellion causing swelling of the four limbs, Fuliou (KI7) is indicated.
For body swelling and skin pain, where clothing contact is intolerable, Wuyi (ST15) is indicated.
For edema, abdominal distension, inability to eat or drink, and aversion to cold, Weicang (BL20) is indicated.
For edema with borborygmus, stomach deficiency with abdominal distension, loss of appetite, periumbilical pain, and qi rushing to the chest causing dyspnea, Shuifen (CV9) is indicated. This point is located one cun below the lower wrist bone and one cun above Shenque (CV8), where the qi of the Ren Mai emerges. Zhen Quan stated: Moxibustion of seven cones daily until reaching four hundred cones; for generalized whole-body edema, moxa one cun above the second toe of the foot, with the number of cones based on the patient's age; additionally, moxa seven cones at the head of the web between the thumbs of both hands.
For abdominal fullness and edema, moxa Pishu (BL20), with the number of cones based on the patient's age, administered three times consecutively.
If edema causes complete fullness of the philtrum and eversion of the lips, it is a fatal sign; Shuigou (GV26) is indicated.
If edema causes the umbilicus to become flat, moxa Zhongwan (CV12/CV8 context implies umbilicus); if the abdomen lacks texture/lines, it is untreatable.
For edema and water qi circulating within the skin and flesh, Yinjiao (CV7) is indicated.
For large water abdomen, water distension, and water qi circulating within the skin and flesh, Shimen (CV5) is indicated.
For stone water (Shi Shui) with pain radiating to the hypochondrium and distension, dizziness, headache, and generalized heat, Guanyuan (CV4) is indicated.
For stone water, puncture Qiegai (ST30).
For stone water, Zhangmen (LR13) and Ranggu (KI2) are indicated.
For water disease, Tianquan (HT1) is indicated.
For excess qi in the abdomen, abdominal distension, qi rebellion, and inability to lie flat, Yinlingquan (SP9) is indicated.
For edema with retained fluid, chest and hypochondriac fullness and distension, puncture Xangu (ST41) to bleed; symptoms will cease immediately.
For edema, abdominal distension, and skin swelling, Zusanli (ST36) is indicated.
For wind-water disease causing knee swelling, Shanglianshu (ST37) is indicated.
For facial swelling, Shangxing (GV23) is indicated; first select [missing character], then select Tiannyou (TE16) and Fengchi (GB20).
For wind-water disease causing facial swelling, Chongyang (ST42) is indicated.
For wind-water disease causing facial swelling and dark complexion, Jiexi (ST41) is indicated.
