论曰足太阳血气盛则眉美，足少阳血气盛则髯美，足少阴血气盛则发美，手阳明血气盛
则髭美。夫经络所至不同，血气各有所属，眉髯发髭。率本于经络之血气，或黑或绀，或黄
或白，可以知盛衰，盖血气在人，犹水之津也，髭发犹津之有 也，津之槁泽而 随之，则
髭发本血气可知矣。
论曰发本于足少阴，髭本于手阳明，二经血气盛则悦泽，血气衰则枯槁，容貌之间，资
是以贲饰，则还枯槁为悦泽，法乌可废。
润颜色，乌髭鬓。天麻丸方
天麻（二两） 木香 玄参 地榆 乌头（炮裂去皮脐） 附子（炮裂去皮脐各半两） 血
竭
（一钱）
上七味。捣罗为末，用白沙蜜一盏，河水一盏，一处熬沸去沫，蜜熟和药，丸如小豆大
，每服二十丸，空心木香酒下。
治髭发枯槁。桂心丸方
桂（去粗皮） 旱莲子草 香白芷 菊花 旋复花 巨胜子 荜澄茄 牛膝（酒浸去皮
各
一两）
上八味。捣为罗末，炼蜜和丸，如梧桐子大，每服三十丸，盐汤下不拘时。
治髭发黄悴。秦椒丸方
秦椒（去目及闭口炒出汗） 生干地黄（焙） 旋复花 白芷（各一两）
上四味。捣罗为末，炼蜜和丸，如梧桐子大，每服三十丸，米泔水下。
染髭黑方
荞面 针沙（醋炒为末各二钱）
上二味。先用醋和浆水，洗髭后，用药涂毕，外用荷叶裹之，约一更时却洗去，再用后
方。
后方
无食子 诃黎勒皮（各二两）
上二味。捣罗为末，每用二钱，大麦面二钱，醋和浆水，调涂髭上，外以荷叶裹，至晓
洗去。
乌髭发。地黄丸方
生地黄汁（一升） 生姜汁（五合） 巨胜子 熟干地黄（焙） 旋复花 干椹子（各
一两）
上六味除二味汁外，捣罗为末，先将前二味汁，用银器煎熟，看稀稠，将药末和丸，如
弹子大，每夜饮酒半酣后，含化一丸。
乌髭方
晚蚕砂（一升） 麻糁心（七两） 大栝蒌（一枚去瓤） 肥皂荚（一挺） 青盐（三
两半）
上五味。以瓷罐子一枚盛药，盐泥固济，顶上留一眼子出烟，用炭十斤，烧尽烟绝，候
冷取出，入苦参末五两，同捣罗为末，每洗漱及临卧时，用一钱揩牙。
乌髭鬓揩牙法
升麻（一两） 诃黎勒（二枚去核为末） 白盐花（半两） 麻糁末（四合取第一遍打
者） 生
干地黄（十二分肥者细切） 粟 饭（一合） 丹砂（一两研临烧时以沙牛粪汁调之免飞上）
上七味拌匀。于净砂瓶中盛，密封头，遍泥阴干，入炉中。四畔以炭火周回烧，半时
辰收之，研为末，每用揩齿，揩齿法，欲使药时，先用生姜一块，如杏仁大烂嚼，须臾即吐
却滓，以左手揩三五遍，就湿点药末，揩十数遍，含津不得吐，以两手取津，涂髭鬓，待辛
辣定，细细咽之。此药兼治香港脚肠风，驻颜益气，若能勤行一生，白髭鬓一百日却黑，赤者
五十日黑，用药二十日便见效，若能空心三遍用，食后更用之。见效尤速。
揩牙乌髭方
栝蒌实（一枚大者） 杏仁（以填实栝蒌为度）
上将栝蒌实，于蒂畔切开，不得切断入杏仁填实，用盐泥固济，木炭火 存性，去泥细
研，早晨及临卧揩齿，良久用温盐汤漱口，不必漱尽，半年见功，至老不复白。
揩牙乌髭方
皂荚（怀州者十条）
上以地黄自然汁，生姜自然汁，各半盏和匀，旋刷皂荚于火上炙。以二药汁尽为度，碾
细为末，入青盐拌匀，逐日如齿药用，经旬见功。
论述说：足太阳膀胱经气血旺盛，则眉毛美观；足少阳胆经气血旺盛，则胡须（鬓角）美观；足少阴肾经气血旺盛，则头发美观；手阳明大肠经气血旺盛，则口唇上方胡须美观。经络所到达的部位各不相同，气血各自有所归属，眉毛、鬓须、头发、口唇上须，都根本源于经络的气血，颜色或黑或青紫，或黄或白，可以由此知晓气血的盛衰。大概气血在人体中，就像水的津液一样，胡须和头发就像津液滋养下的草木，如果津液干枯润泽不足而草木随之枯槁，那么胡须和头发的状态根本取决于气血，这是显而易见的。
论述说：头发根本源于足少阴肾经，口唇上须根本源于手阳明大肠经，这两条经络的气血旺盛则光泽悦目，气血衰弱则干枯憔悴，容貌之间，依靠这些来装饰修饰，那么使干枯憔悴恢复为光泽悦目，乌发的方法不可废弃。
润色容颜，使胡须鬓发变黑的天麻丸方：
天麻（二两）、木香、玄参、地榆、乌头（炮制裂开，去皮去脐）、附子（炮制裂开，去皮去脐，各半两）、血竭（一钱）。
以上七味药。捣碎过筛成粉末，用白沙蜜一盏、河水一盏，一起熬沸去除浮沫，待蜜炼熟后调和药粉，制成如小豆大小的药丸。每次服用二十丸，空腹时用木香酒送服。
治疗胡须头发干枯憔悴的桂心丸方：
桂（去除粗皮）、旱莲子草、香白芷、菊花、旋复花、巨胜子（即黑芝麻）、荜澄茄、牛膝（酒浸，去皮，各一两）。
以上八味药。捣碎过筛成粉末，用炼蜜调和制成药丸，如梧桐子大小。每次服用三十丸，不拘时间，用盐汤送服。
治疗胡须发黄憔悴的秦椒丸方：
秦椒（去掉椒目及闭口者，炒至出汗）、生干地黄（焙干）、旋复花、白芷（各一两）。
以上四味药。捣碎过筛成粉末，用炼蜜调和制成药丸，如梧桐子大小。每次服用三十丸，用米泔水送服。
染黑胡须方：
荞麦面、针沙（醋炒后研成粉末，各二钱）。
以上两味药。先用醋和浆水清洗胡须，然后涂上药物，外用荷叶包裹，大约一个时辰后洗去，再用后方。
后方：
无食子、诃黎勒皮（各二两）。
以上两味药。捣碎过筛成粉末，每次取二钱，配大麦面二钱，用醋和浆水调匀涂于胡须上，外用荷叶包裹，到第二天早晨洗去。
使胡须头发变黑的地黄丸方：
生地黄汁（一升）、生姜汁（五合）、巨胜子（即黑芝麻）、熟干地黄（焙干）、旋复花、干椹子（各一两）。
以上六味药，除两种汁液外，将其他药材捣碎过筛成粉末。先将前两种汁液用银器煎熟，观察稀稠程度，用药末调和制成如弹子大小的药丸。每晚饮酒微醉后，含化一丸。
乌须方：
晚蚕砂（一升）、麻糁心（七两）、大栝蒌（一枚，去瓤）、肥皂荚（一挺）、青盐（三两半）。
以上五味药。用一个瓷罐盛放药物，用盐泥密封加固，顶部留一个小孔排烟，用十斤炭火烧尽，直到烟绝，冷却后取出，加入苦参末五两，一同捣碎过筛成粉末。每次洗漱及临睡前，取一钱用来刷牙。
乌须鬓刷牙法：
升麻（一两）、诃黎勒（二枚，去核研成粉末）、白盐花（半两）、麻糁末（四合，取第一遍打的）、生干地黄（十二分肥大的，细切）、粟米饭（一合）、丹砂（一两，研磨，临烧时以沙牛粪汁调和以防飞散）。
以上七味药拌匀。放入干净的砂瓶中，密封瓶口，周围用泥封固，阴干后放入炉中。四周用炭火环绕焚烧，半个时辰后收取，研成粉末。每次使用时刷牙，欲使用此药时，先用一块生姜，大小如杏仁，嚼烂，片刻后吐出渣滓，用左手擦拭牙齿三五遍，就着湿润点取药末，擦拭十数遍，含住津液不要吐掉，用双手收集津液，涂抹于胡须和鬓角，待辛辣感消退后，细细咽下。此药兼治脚气、肠风，驻颜益气，若能坚持一生勤用，白胡须鬓角一百天后变黑，红色的五十天变黑，用药二十天便见效，若能空腹三次使用，饭后再用，见效更快。
刷牙乌须方：
栝蒌实（一枚大的）、杏仁（以填满栝蒌为度）。
上将栝蒌实在蒂部切开，不要切断，填入杏仁并用盐泥密封加固，用木炭火煅烧存性，去掉泥土细研。早晨及临睡前刷牙，良久后用温盐水漱口，不必漱净，半年可见功效，到老不再变白。
刷牙乌须方：
皂荚（怀州产的十条）。
以上用生地黄自然汁、生姜自然汁，各半盏混合均匀，随时刷在皂荚上并在火上炙烤。以两种药汁用完为度，碾细成粉末，加入青盐拌匀，每日像用牙膏一样使用，经过十天可见功效。
It is stated that when the blood and qi of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian are abundant, the eyebrows are beautiful; when the blood and qi of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian are abundant, the sideburns/beard are beautiful; when the blood and qi of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian are abundant, the hair is beautiful; when the blood and qi of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian are abundant, the mustache is beautiful. The pathways of the meridians reach different locations, and blood and qi belong to specific areas respectively. Eyebrows, sideburns, hair, and mustaches all originate fundamentally from the blood and qi of the meridians. Their colors may be black, cyan-purple, yellow, or white, allowing one to discern their abundance or deficiency. Generally, blood and qi in the human body are like the fluids (Jinye) of water; the mustache and hair are like vegetation nourished by these fluids. If the fluids become dry and lose their moisture, causing the vegetation to wither accordingly, it is evident that the condition of the mustache and hair depends fundamentally on blood and qi.
It is stated that hair originates fundamentally from the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and the mustache originates fundamentally from the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. When the blood and qi of these two meridians are abundant, the appearance is lustrous and pleasing; when deficient, they become withered and emaciated. Between features of the face, these serve as adornment. Therefore, to restore withered states to lustrous ones, methods for darkening hair should not be discarded.
Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Elata Pill) for Nourishing Complexion and Darkening Mustache and Sideburns:
Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, 天麻) (2 liang), Costi Radix (Muxiang, 木香), Scutellariae Barbatae Radix (Xuanshen, 玄参 - *Note: Standard WHO term for Xuanshen is Scrophulariae Radix, but text says Xuanshen which is Scrophularia ningpoensis*), Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu, 地榆), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Wutou, 乌头) (prepared until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed), Aconiti Carminativi Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) (prepared until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed, each 0.5 liang), Draco Sanguis (Xuejie, 血竭) (1 qian).
The above seven ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder. Using one zhan of white sand honey and one zhan of river water, boil together until foaming is removed. When the honey is properly refined, mix with the medicine powder and roll into pills the size of small beans. Take 20 pills per dose, administered empty-stomach with Muxiang-infused wine.
Guixin Wan (Cinnamon Heart Pill) for Treating Withered and Emaciated Mustache and Hair:
Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui, 桂) (remove coarse bark), Ecliptae Herba (Hanzhiliancao, 旱莲子草), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Xiangbaizhi, 香白芷), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花), Inulae Flos (Xuanjinfahua, 旋复花), Sesami Nigrum Semen (Jushengzi, 巨胜子), Galangali Fructus (Bichengqie, 荜澄茄), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝) (soaked in wine, skin removed, each 1 liang).
The above eight ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, administered at any time with salt water decoction.
Qinjiao Wan (Zanthoxylum Pepper Pill) for Treating Yellow and Emaciated Mustache:
Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Qinjiao, 秦椒) (remove pips and closed-mouth peppers, stir-fry until sweat appears), Rehmanniae Radix Recens Exsiccatata (Shenggandihuang, 生干地黄) (baked), Inulae Flos (Xuanjinfahua, 旋复花), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷) (each 1 liang).
The above four ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, administered with rice wash water.
Formula for Dyeing Mustache Black:
Fagopyri Tatarici Semen (Qiaomian, 荞面), Zhen Sha (Needle Sand) (stir-fried with vinegar and powdered, each 2 qian).
The above two ingredients. First, wash the mustache with a mixture of vinegar and Jiangshui (fermented grain water). After applying the medicine, wrap externally with lotus leaves. After approximately one geng period (approx. 2 hours), wash off, then use the following formula.
Following Formula:
Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus (Wushi, 无食子), Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium (Helilepi, 诃黎勒皮) (each 2 liang).
The above two ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder. Use 2 qian each time, mixed with 2 qian of barley flour, blended with vinegar and Jiangshui, applied to the mustache. Wrap externally with lotus leaves. Wash off at dawn.
Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) for Darkening Mustache and Hair:
Rehmanniae Radix Recens Juice (Shengdihuangzhi, 生地黄汁) (1 sheng), Zingiberis Recens Juice (Shengjiangzhi, 生姜汁) (5 he), Sesami Nigrum Semen (Jushengzi, 巨胜子), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shugandihuang, 熟干地黄) (baked), Inulae Flos (Xuanjinfahua, 旋复花), Mori Fructus Dry (Ganshenzi, 干椹子) (each 1 liang).
The above six ingredients, excluding the two juices, are crushed and sifted into powder. First, cook the two juices in a silver vessel until ready. Observe the consistency, then mix with the powder to form pills the size of a marble. Every night, after drinking until slightly intoxicated, dissolve one pill in the mouth.
Wu Zi Formula for Darkening Mustache:
Bombyx Batryticatus (Wancan sha, 晚蚕砂) (1 sheng), Cannabis Sativa Seed Heart (Masenxin, 麻糁心) (7 liang), Trichosanthis Fructus Magna (Da Gualou, 大栝蒌) (one fruit, remove pulp), Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Fangzhao jia, 肥皂荚) (one stick), Natrii Chloridum Viride (Qingyan, 青盐) (3.5 liang).
The above five ingredients are placed in a porcelain jar. Seal firmly with salt mud, leaving a small hole at the top for smoke to escape. Burn with 10 jin of charcoal until the smoke ceases. Allow to cool, then remove. Add 5 liang of Sophorae Flavescentis Radix powder, crush and sift together into powder. Use 1 qian to brush teeth during washing and before sleep.
Method for Brushing Teeth to Darken Mustache and Sideburns:
Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) (1 liang), Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus (Helile, 诃黎勒) (two fruits, remove pits and powder), Bai Yanhua (White Salt Flower, 白盐花) (0.5 liang), Masenmo (Cannabis Seed Powder, 麻糁末) (4 he, taken from the first pressing), Shenggandihuang (Raw Dried Rehmannia, 生干地黄) (twelve parts plump, finely sliced), Setaria Italica Rice (Su, 粟) (cooked rice, 1 he), Cinnabaris (Dansha, 丹砂) (1 liang, ground; when burning, mix with juice of cow dung from sandy soil to prevent flying ash).
The above seven ingredients are mixed evenly. Place in a clean sand bottle, seal the head tightly, mud-seal around, and dry in shade. Place in a furnace. Surround with charcoal fire and burn for half a shichen (approx. 1 hour), then collect. Grind into powder. For use, first chew a piece of fresh ginger, size of an almond, until soft, then spit out the dregs. Rub teeth 3-5 times with the left hand. Apply wet powder to teeth and rub 10+ times. Retain saliva, do not spit. Collect saliva with both hands and apply to mustache and sideburns. Wait for the pungency to subside, then slowly swallow. This medicine also treats podagra (Hongjiaojiao) and intestinal wind, preserves youth, and boosts qi. If used diligently throughout life, white mustache/sideburns turn black in 100 days, red ones in 50 days. Effects appear within 20 days of use. If used three times on an empty stomach and again after meals, effects are even faster.
Brushing Teeth Formula for Darkening Mustache:
Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou Shi, 栝蒌实) (one large fruit), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (fill the trichosanthis completely).
Cut the Trichosanthis fruit at the stem end without severing it. Fill with almonds. Seal with salt mud. Roast over wood charcoal fire until "preserving nature" (cindered but not ashed). Remove mud and grind finely. Brush teeth in the morning and before sleep. Rinse with warm salt water after a while, without rinsing completely. Visible results in half a year; hair will not whiten in old age.
Brushing Teeth Formula for Darkening Mustache:
Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaojia, 皂荚) (ten sticks from Huaizhou).
Mix equal parts of natural juice of Rehmanniae Radix Recens and natural juice of Zingiberis Recens (half zhan each). Brush this mixture onto the Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus and roast over fire. Continue until the juices are exhausted. Grind into fine powder, mix with Natrii Chloridum Viride. Use daily like toothpaste. Results visible after ten days.
