Discourse states: The disease of Kidney Distension (Shen Zhang) is characterized by abdominal fullness radiating to the back with a sense of discomfort, and pain in the waist and hips. This is because the Kidney governs the waist and lower limbs; its meridian belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin (Lesser Yin of the Foot), which is interiorly-exteriorly related to the Foot-Taiyang (Greater Yang of the Foot). The pathway of the Kidney meridian descends to reach the lower abdomen, connects internally with the branch of the Bladder meridian, passes through the hip joint, and follows the lateral aspect of the thigh. When the Kidney meridian is disturbed, it causes disease where the thigh cannot be flexed. Currently, cold pathogenic qi accumulates in the Kidney meridian and fails to diffuse and circulate freely, causing qi stagnation and resulting in distension.
