Commentary states: Individuals suffering from deficiency consumption (Xu Lao) have long exhausted their Qi and Blood. Cold pathogens overstep and transform into heat, lodging in the Upper Jiao, internally damaging the Heart and Lungs, and depleting Ying and Wei. The Heart governs Blood, which constitutes Ying; the Lung governs Qi, which constitutes Wei. When Ying and Wei are disharmonious, Metal (Lung) and Fire (Heart) mutually overcome each other, making the condition difficult to treat. Consequently, coughing may intermittently produce pus and blood, which is the result of fluids rotting and transforming. It is appropriate to moisten and nourish the Upper Jiao, and tonify Ying and Wei, so that the illness will ease and resolve.
