It is stated that: Stagnation of the Zang-Fu organs and accumulated heat in the Liver Meridian rush upward to the eyes, causing eye pain and eyeball tenderness. If toxic heat accumulates, severe cases may develop black nodules on the cornea (black pupil) resembling crab eyes, hence the name. Some appear like beans, termed "damaged nebula" (Sun Yi), or "detached from the eye" (Li Jing), also called "crab eye" (Xie Jing). This condition is extremely difficult to treat; it should not be treated with hooking or cutting methods, nor with applications of various toxic drugs. It is only suitable to administer purgative and dispersing agents to clear pathogenic heat, after which the disease will resolve.
