Commentary states: The wind-dampness-toxic qi of Hong Kong Jiao (a disease characterized by swelling and fullness of the lower legs, numbness, and pain) lodges in and combats the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney is the gate of the Stomach. If the opening and closing of this gate are not smooth, water will accumulate and cause disease. Water nature tends downward; therefore, it causes Kidney Qi to fail to transform, urination to be difficult, and damp-cold qi to pour down into the shins, causing swelling that does not subside. Thus, it is called Hong Kong Jiao swelling and fullness.
