One of these formulas is named "Baohe" (Preserve Harmony). This is because after hemorrhage, qi and blood are not yet harmonized, making it difficult to grasp the condition. However, regulating blood primarily involves regulating qi; regulating qi is actually governed by the Lung. This is why it is called "Preserve Harmony"! As for "Baozhen" (Preserve Truth), the ingredients for qi and blood are balanced in weight. The main principle relies on sweet-warm herbs, assisted by sweet-cool herbs, and bitter-cold herbs are also used as assistants, without completely banning bitter-cold herbs. This differs from the modern use of cold-cooling herbs. It is called "Preserve Truth" because it greatly assists the righteous qi while simultaneously draining pathogenic factors, allowing vital energy to be lively and growing naturally and continuously. Both formulas are fully prepared according to method, but they are not all used; they are listed here tentatively for scholars to select or discard as appropriate. Students must understand this.
Chen Xiuyuan's commentary: This formula is essentially Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction), removing Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) and Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), and adding Red Poria (Chifuling), Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdihuang), Asparagi Cochinchinensis Rhizoma (Tiandong), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi). Liver fire is thunder fire. Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) and Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex (Huangbai) descend kidney fire, which is dragon fire. Combined with Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), they form Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder), unifying heaven and water qi. Combined with Asparagi Cochinchinensis Rhizoma (Tiandong), they form Santang Tang (Three Powers Decoction) to nourish and regulate the whole body. The most ingenious aspect is that Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Magnolia Bark (Houpo), and Licorice Root (Gancao) enter the stomach, widening the middle and moving stagnation, guiding each herb to exert its movement power, thereby coordinating and assisting each other. Moreover, the weights of the herbs are appropriate, demonstrating great methodology. However, Peony Root can be distinguished by the red or white color of its flower, but its root cannot be distinguished. In medicine shops, there is another herb with small leaves and large roots, indistinguishable from Peony Root. I personally saw collectors filling bags with it in the mountains. When asked, they said that the Red Peony Root prepared by the shop was all this kind. Only then did I believe the annotation in *Bencao Chongyuan* stating: "It is unknown what root constitutes Red Peony Root." The current habitual use of this in surgery and pediatrics, which harms people, is not an empty statement; Red Peony Root should be removed from this formula.
