Treats disharmony between the Heart and Spleen, dysfunction of Qi ascending and descending, cholera with muscle cramps (tetany), vomiting and diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, phlegm-induced asthma and cough, chest and diaphragm fullness and stuffiness, dizziness and headache, limb edema, lethargy and fatigue, scanty and painful urination. It is also applicable to cases where Yin and Yang differentiation is unclear in Cold Damage diseases, or when exposed to Summerheat with latent heat causing irritability, which may develop into dysentery; it can also be used for post-drinking thirst, aversion to food, and even during pregnancy.
Amomi Fructus Rotundus (crushed) Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (soaked in boiling water seven times) Armeniacae Semen Amarum (skin and tip removed, each 1 liang) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (rhizome removed) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (honey-fried, each 1 liang) Poria Cocos (red variety, skin removed) Agastaches Herba (dirt removed) Phaseoli Semen Album (lightly stir-fried with ginger juice) Chaenomelis Fructus (each 2 liang) Moslae Herba (Xiangru) Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (processed with ginger juice, each 4 liang)
The above herbs are coarsely crushed. Take 1 liang per dose, add two cups of water, three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (fresh ginger), and one Jujubae Fructus (date). Decoct until one cup remains, and take warm. This is a formula that clears fire, harmonizes the middle, and resolves summerheat; it is an essential medicine for treating summerheat disorders.
Treats latent summerheat leading to excessive drinking, dry mouth and throat, or vomiting and diarrhea; it treats all these conditions. Another prescription adds Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) 4 liang, stir-fried with ginger juice until dark yellow, named Huanglian Xiangru Yin (Coptis Twig Decoction). If there are spasms or convulsions, add Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) and decoct for administration.
Moslae Herba (Xiangru) (cleaned, 1 jin) Phaseoli Semen Album (lightly stir-fried, half a jin) Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (skin removed, cooked熟 with ginger juice, half a jin)
The above herbs are coarsely crushed. Take 3 qian per dose, add one cup of water and a little wine. Decoct until seven parts remain. Take when cool, at any time. If taken while hot, it may cause diarrhea; aged Moslae Herba (Xiangru) is preferred.
Resolves summerheat and harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach.
Moslae Herba (Xiangru) (1 liang) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (rhizome removed) Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (white pith removed) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (stir-fried with soil) [Missing character, likely Astragali Radix] (rhizome removed) Phaseoli Semen Album (stir-fried, shelled removed) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (honey-fried) Dried Chaenomelis Fructus Poria Cocos (skin removed) Houpo (skin removed, stir-fried with ginger juice until black, each 5 qian)
The above are ground into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with either hot water or cold water as desired.
The above are all pungent-dispersing formulas for driving out summerheat. Generally, Moslae Herba (Xiangru) has a strong aroma that disperses summerheat, Chaenomelis Fructus effectively overcomes summerheat, and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex broadens the middle and regulates Qi; thus, they are considered essential medicines.
