Binglang (Arecae Semen, 槟榔) (2 qian), Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 厚朴) (1 qian), Caoguoren (Tsaoko Fructus, 草果仁) (0.5 qian), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 知母) (1 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍) (1 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩) (1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) (0.5 qian).
Take the above herbs, add two zhong of water, decoct until eight fen remains, and take warm in the afternoon.
Wu Youke stated: Binglang has the functions of resolving accumulation and grinding stagnation, eliminating latent pathogenic factors, and is a drug for dredging and promoting free flow; it can also eliminate miasma in Lingnan. Nongpo breaks up the clumping of perverted qi (li qi), and Caoguo, with its pungent, acrid, and vigorous aroma, eliminates latent pathogens entrenched within.
These three herbs work together to reach the nest of the pathogen directly, causing the pathogenic factor to disperse and quickly leave the Mu Yuan (Membrane Source), hence the name Da Yuan Yin (Reach the Origin Decoction). When heat injures body fluids, Zhimu is added to nourish yin; when heat injures Ying blood, Shaoyao is added to harmonize blood; Huangqin clears residual dry-heat, and Gancao serves to harmonize the Middle Jiao. The latter four ingredients are harmonizing agents, akin to giving water to one who is thirsty, rather than drugs that eradicate the disease root. Whenever epidemic pathogens overflow into various meridians, one should follow the meridian indications to assist in ascending and venting. For example, if there is hypochondriac pain, deafness, alternating chills and fever, vomiting, and bitter taste in the mouth, this indicates pathogenic heat overflowing into the Shao Yang Meridian (Shaoyang Disease); add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡) 1 qian to this formula. If there is pain in the lower back, upper back, and neck, this indicates pathogenic heat overflowing into the Tai Yang Meridian (Taiyang Disease); add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 羌活) 1 qian to this formula. If there is eye pain, pain in the supraorbital ridge, orbital pain, dry nose, and insomnia, this indicates pathogenic heat overflowing into the Yang Ming Meridian (Yangming Disease); add Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 葛根) 1 qian to this formula. However, conditions vary in speed and severity, and medications differ in quantity and urgency; one must always exercise discretion at the time of treatment. The specified dosages are merely approximate and should not be applied rigidly.
Binglang, Caoguo, Nongpo, Shaoyao, Gancao, Zhimu, Huangqin, Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄), Gegen, Qianghuo, Chaihu, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 生姜), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 大枣) serve as guiding herbs.
Zheng Supu stated: Regarding the additions for the Three Yang meridians, it is not necessary to use them all; each should be used according to the specific meridian affected.
Dahuang (5 qian), Nongpo (1 qian), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 枳实) (1 qian), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 芒硝).
Decoct with water and ginger and take orally. Reduce the dosage by half for frail individuals; reduce each ingredient by half again for mild pathogens.
