To treat Liver Li Feng (a disease caused by wind-toxin invading the liver) resulting in sudden aphonia. According to ancient methods, Da Xuming Tang (Great Revival Decoction) and Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Revival Decoction) are used to generally treat Pi Ku (hemiplegia) of the five Zang organs and Zei Feng (sudden wind-pathogen).
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 8 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 4 liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 2 liang each), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang each), Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, 70 seeds), Jingli (Bambusa Textilis Juice, 1 sheng).
The above nine herbs are cut into pieces. Boil with one dou of water. First, boil Mahuang for two boils, skim off the foam, then add the remaining herbs. Simmer to obtain four sheng of decoction, strain to remove dregs. Then add Jingli, boil for a few more boils. Divide into four doses. If speech returns, it is effective. If not cured, subsequently administer Xiao Xuming Tang. The old version lacked Jingli; it is now added, yielding miraculous efficacy. (Qianjin Yi Fang contains Gancao.)
Another prescription: To treat severe wind-pathogen invading the Zang organs, causing sudden inability to speak, limbs hanging limp, and insensitivity to pain or itching in skin and flesh.
Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 liang each), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Fuling (Poria), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang each).
The above twelve herbs are cut into pieces. Boil with one dou and two sheng of water to obtain four sheng of decoction. Divide into five doses; elderly and children take half. If spontaneous sweating occurs upon initial onset, reduce the dosage of Mahuang; if no sweating, follow the original formula. For symptoms of Qi rebellion (Shangqi), add Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, 2 liang) and Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 liang). For dry retching (Gan'ou), double the addition of Fuzi by one liang. For vomiting, add Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 liang). For shortness of breath and weak Qi in the chest (Xi Xi Shao Qi), add Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 seeds). For palpitations and fright (Xin Xia Jing Ji), add Fuling (Poria, 1 liang). If there is heat, remove Shengjiang and increase Gegen. Upon initial onset of wind, do not adjust ingredients yet; prepare three doses first, pause for four to five days, then re-evaluate. Administer the decoction based on assessment of deficiency or excess. Perform acupuncture according to acupoints and moxibustion.
Another prescription: Same as the aforementioned Da Xuming Tang, suitable for postpartum women, the elderly, and children.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 liang each), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang each), Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, 40 seeds).
The above nine herbs are cut into pieces. Boil with one dou of water to obtain three sheng of decoction. Divide into three doses. (Waitai Mi Yao names this Xuming Tang; Fan Wang records similarly, stating it is originally a formula from Zhang Zhongjing missing two ingredients.)
