(Two discourses, four prescriptions, two methods)
The discourse states: How can one know if a woman is pregnant? A pulse that is level and deficient is the method for bearing children. The Classics state, "When the Yin pulse beats vigorously and differs from the Yang, it is called having a child." This indicates harmonious Qi and Blood, with Yang exerting its influence and Yin transforming it. If the pulse of the Hand-Shaoyin (Heart Meridian) moves particularly rapidly, it indicates pregnancy. Shaoyin refers to the Heart pulse. The Heart governs the vessels and blood; additionally, the Kidney is named the Gate of the Uterus (Bao Men) and the Door of the Child (Zi Hu). The Chi position reflects the Kidney pulse; if the Chi pulse feels unceasing upon pressure, this is the sign of pregnancy. If the pulses at the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions are equal in depth (floating or sinking), and feel unceasing upon pressure, it indicates conception.
At the beginning of pregnancy, the Cun pulse is minute and small, with five beats per respiration. By the third month, the Chi pulse becomes rapid.
During the fourth month of pregnancy, to determine the sex of the fetus: if the left hand pulse is rapid, it is a male; if the right hand pulse is rapid, it is a female; if both hands are rapid, twins will be born. Another method: if the left hand pulse is deep and solid, it is a male; if the right hand pulse is floating and large, it is a female; if both hands are deep and solid, two males will be born; if both are floating and large, two females will be born. If the Chi pulse is larger on the left, it is a male; if larger on the right, it is a female; if both are large, twins will be born, feeling full and solid. Another method: if the Chi position on the left hand is floating and large, it is a male; if the Chi position on the right hand is deep and fine, it is a female. If the pulse comes and cuts off abruptly, menstrual flow is obstructed. Another method: if both Chi pulses are floating, two males will be born; otherwise, a female may be mistaken for a male. If both Chi pulses are deep, two females will be born; otherwise, a male may be mistaken for a female. Another method: obtaining a Taiyin pulse indicates a male; obtaining a Taiyang pulse indicates a female. The Taiyin pulse is deep, and the Taiyang pulse is floating. Another test: have the pregnant woman walk far facing south, then call her name. If she turns her head to the left, it is a male; if to the right, it is a female. Another belief: if the husband's left breast has a nodule, it is a male; if the right breast has a nodule, it is a female.
To know if delivery is imminent during pregnancy: if the pulse deviates from the regular pattern (Li Jing Mai) and is floating, and if abdominal pain radiates to the lower back and spine, birth will occur today. The presence of the Li Jing pulse alone does not indicate disease. Another method: when birth is near, the pulse deviates from the regular pattern. If pain begins at midnight, birth will occur at noon.
The discourse states: Whenever a woman is weak and emaciated, deficient in Qi and Blood, and weak in Kidney Qi, or has been exposed to wind and consumed too much cold food or drink, leading to phlegm-fluid retention in the epigastrium, she may desire pregnancy but suffer from Pregnancy Nausea and Vomiting (E Zu Bing). For those desiring pregnancy, menstruation still occurs normally, complexion and skin appear normal, but they suffer from heaviness, mental restlessness, loss of appetite, and do not know the source of their discomfort. When the pulse is smooth and peaceful, this indicates impending conception. After two months, menstruation ceases, indicating fetal formation. Patients with E Zu Bing suffer from mental restlessness, heavy head and dizzy eyes, heavy limbs, lethargy and unwillingness to work, aversion to the smell of food, craving for salty, sour fruits, sleeping much and rising little, known in the world as "aversion to food." By the third or fourth month and beyond, severe vomiting occurs, making self-control impossible. This is because the menstrual blood has closed, water dampness infiltrates the Zang organs, and Zang Qi fails to circulate freely, causing mental restlessness and irritability, rebellious Qi leading to vomiting. Unblocked blood vessels and obstructed meridians cause heavy limbs; if complicated by Wind, dizziness of the head and eyes occurs. Upon observing these signs, one should immediately administer Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction). After several doses, using Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) to eliminate phlegm-fluid will restore appetite. Once nourished by food, physical strength increases, Qi becomes abundant, providing sufficient power to nourish the fetus, and the mother becomes healthy. Ancient and modern treatments for E Zu Bing include over ten prescriptions. Regardless of deficiency or excess, cold or heat, or age, almost all cases can be cured with this prescription.
