(Two Discourses, Twenty-Seven Prescriptions, One Moxibustion Method)
Discourse: The reason why infants and young children suffer from Ke Wu (Guest Assault) disease is that the breath of outsiders assaults them. It is also called Zhong Ren (Hitting Person), which is referred to as Ke Wu. Even if it is family members, if they live in separate rooms or different households; even if it is the wet nurse or parents, if they return from outside, their clothes may be contaminated with spirits, coarse and violent qi, or the odor of cattle and horses, all of these constitute an assault. When one engages in physical labor and breathes heavily, or when the milk qi has not yet settled before nursing, it can lead to Ke Wu. If the wet nurse encounters drunkenness or sexual exhaustion, and nurses the infant while still panting, the condition will be most severe and can even kill the infant; this must not be taken lightly. Whenever one rides a horse and gets covered in the foul smell of horse sweat, without washing hands and changing clothes before approaching the infant, it causes the infant to suffer from Ma Ke Wu (Horse Guest Assault). When an infant suddenly sees a horse, is startled by the neighing of horses, or comes into contact with the horse odor on items from the horse, it causes the child to suffer from Horse Guest Assault. Careful protection is required, especially for one-year-old infants.
For infants' clothing, there should be no human hair in the fabric or cotton padding, nor in the shoes. White clothes paired with green belts, or green clothes paired with white belts, can all cause Zhong Wu (Assault).
Any abnormal person or object coming from outside can also startle infants to the point of causing disease. To prevent this, whenever people come from outside or strange objects enter the house, one should take the infant away to avoid letting them see these things. If avoidance is not possible, burning cow dung to maintain smoke at the entrance is beneficial.
Infants suffering from Ke Wu-like diseases can occur at any time. However, why do all infants fall ill in early autumn? Is it because all infants are assaulted by guest pathogens? Infants have fewer illnesses in spring and winter but more in autumn and summer because, during autumn and summer, the infant's Yang Qi is external, and their blood vessels are tender and weak. In late early summer and early autumn, there is often sudden cold in the morning and evening. Due to their tender constitution, infants are easily injured externally. Sudden cold damages their Yang Qi; when Yang Qi becomes constrained, high fever occurs; when the stomach becomes cold, diarrhea ensues. Therefore, in late summer and early autumn, infants often present with high fever and diarrhea, which are not necessarily caused by Ke Wu or Ba (a mythical demon). When treating pediatric conditions, one should always monitor the temperature changes in late summer and early autumn. If there is sudden cold, infants are prone to high fever accompanied by diarrhea. One must not use purgatives first; instead, one should first detoxify (eliminate pathogenic factors) and then use purgatives.
The *Xuanzhong Ji* records that there is a bird under heaven named Gu Huo (written as Wu Hu in *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* and *Zimu Milu*), also known as Tian Di Nu (Heavenly Emperor's Daughter), Yin Fei Niao (Hidden Flying Bird), Ye Xing You Nu (Night-Walking Wandering Woman), or Diao Xing Gui (Hook-Star Ghost). It likes to fly and cry on rainy nights, lingering in villages, and comes when called. This bird is purely female with no males and cannot lay eggs; it is born from the transformation of toxic Yin Qi. It likes to drop its feathers in people's courtyards and place them in infants' clothes, causing the infant to develop Epilepsy (Xian Bing), which leads to death, after which it transforms into the infant itself. Therefore, from birth until ten years old, infants' clothing and bedding should not be exposed, especially in the seventh and eighth lunar months.
Illnesses caused by Ke Wu typically manifest as vomiting and diarrhea of blue, yellow, white, or mixed substances, separation of water and grain, severe abdominal pain like twisting, and changes in facial complexion. The symptoms resemble Epilepsy, except that the eyes do not roll upward, and the pulse is rapid and urgent. This condition should be treated with Long Dan Tang (Gentian Decoction) to purge, adding Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), in proportions equal to or varying slightly from the dosage of Long Dan Cao (Gentian Root).
For infants suffering from Ke Wu, urgently examine the left and right sides of the Xuan Yong Chui (Uvula) in the mouth. There should be swollen, dark blue or black vascular nodules, about the size of hemp seeds or beans, colored red, white, or blue. In such cases, one should immediately puncture them with a needle to drain the blood, or pinch them open with fingernails, and wipe away the blood using a cotton-wrapped hairpin head.
Pediatric Ke Wu presents with vomiting and diarrhea of blue, yellow, red, and white fluids, abdominal pain, opisthotonos (backward arching of the body), supine or lateral posturing, panting resembling epilepsy, though the eyes do not roll upward and sleep is reduced. The complexion changes among five colors, and the pulse is wiry and urgent. If treatment is delayed, the longer it goes untreated, the harder it becomes to cure. The prescription for treatment is as follows:
Take several he of Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean Pills), moisten them with water, pound them into a paste, and form pills the size of chicken eggs. Use these to massage the infant's Fontanelle (Baihui area) and the palms and soles of the hands and feet, repeating each area five to six times. Then, use the pill to massage the infant's chest area.
Prescription for Infantile Ke Wu with Stiff Neck Approaching Death:
Take ten Bai Yu (White Fish found in books/clothes), grind them into powder, and apply to the mother's nipple so the infant can suckle it. Relief comes immediately upon swallowing. (Another method uses two pieces applied to the mother's hand, covering the infant's umbilicus; the infant recovers after vomiting and diarrhea. Alternatively, massage the infant's neck and stiff areas of the spine.)
Another Prescription: Swallow a amount of She Xiang (Musk) the size of a soybean, and relief is immediate.
Prescription for Pediatric Acute Ke Wu:
Shear spiral hair from the shoulder blade of the donkey's front leg, about the size of a marble. Decoct it in milk until the hair dissolves and the medicine is ready. Apply to the nipple for the infant to suckle; relief occurs as soon as it enters the throat.
Another Prescription: Burn three cun of the mother's girdle, mix with hair and milk, and administer orally.
Another Prescription: Consume Niu Bi Jin (Cow Nasal Mucus). Or, apply Niu Kou Mo (Cow Saliva) to the nipple for the infant to suckle.
