[Formula] Wuwu Gancao Shengmo Gao (Five-Ingredient Licorice Raw Massage Paste) / Moxibustion Methods
Treating newborns with tender and weak skin, who are prone to invasion by wind pathogens, presenting with high fever, or suffering from severe wind stroke, resulting in convulsions and tremors of the hands and feet.
Ingredients: Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) (each 1 liang); Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) (each 20 zhu); Leiwan (Caulis Asari Radiatis) (2.5 liang).
The above five herbs are chopped and decocted in 1 jin of lard from a pig that has not been exposed to water to make a paste. Simmer over a mild fire, monitoring the thickness and turbidity until the paste is ready. Strain out the dregs.
Take one pill-sized portion (size of a bullet), warm it in the hand, and massage the infant's body one hundred times. Adjust according to the child's constitution: if cold, apply more warmth; if hot, apply cooling measures (Note: This implies balancing Yin and Yang through massage technique or adjunctive care). Even if the infant is healthy, applying this paste to massage the fontanelle and the palms and soles of the feet every morning can effectively prevent wind-cold invasion.
Discussion states: For newborns without disease, one must strictly avoid contrary acupuncture and moxibustion. If contrary procedures are performed, the infant will endure pain and disturb the Zang organs, leading to illness. In the Heluo and Guanzhong regions, where the climate is often cold, infants are prone to spasms. Therefore, contrary moxibustion is commonly performed on the third day after birth for prevention. Additionally, moxibustion at the cheeks is used to prevent trismus (lockjaw). Infants with trismus exhibit tight sublingual vessels and tense mandibular muscles. Due to the cold climate in these areas, bloodletting via tongue pricking and cheek moxibustion are employed to prevent trismus. In the Wu and Shu regions, where the climate is warm, such diseases do not occur. Ancient formulas have been transmitted, but modern practitioners who fail to account for the differences between northern and southern climates often misuse them, thereby harming infants. Consequently, rural children raised naturally tend to thrive without premature death.
For infants with sudden crying, limb twitching during sleep, and unresolved Bianzheng (physiological growth phases in infancy), acupuncture, moxibustion, and scratching must be avoided to prevent disturbing the hundred meridians and transforming fright into epilepsy. Only Yin Epilepsy, trismus, and spasms may be treated with acupuncture and moxibustion.
When treating epilepsy with moxibustion, one should first induce defecation to empty the interior, then perform moxibustion while the patient is in a deficient state. Performing moxibustion before clearing excess pathogenic factors can cause Qi stagnation and blockage, potentially leading to death.
Epileptic seizures occurring at Pingdan (3-5 AM) involve the Foot Shaoyang channel. Seizures in the early morning involve the Foot Jueyin channel. Seizures at noon involve the Foot Taiyang channel. Seizures at dusk involve the Foot Taiyin channel. Seizures at Rending (9-11 PM) involve the Foot Yangming channel. Seizures at midnight involve the Foot Shaoyin channel.
The above indicates the location of the pathogen based on the time of seizure onset. One should moxa the corresponding channels/acupoints. Epilepsy includes Five Zang Epilepsy and Six Livestock Epilepsy, affecting either the limbs or the abdomen. Carefully assess the symptoms and moxa according to the pathology. Although mild cases can be cured, neglecting the key principles causes harm.
Liver Epilepsy presents with a cyan complexion, upward staring eyes, and shaking of the hands and feet. Moxa the Foot Shaoyang and Foot Jueyin channels, three moxa cones each.
Heart Epilepsy presents with a red complexion, heat sensation below the heart, shortness of breath with rapid and faint pulse. Moxa the depression at the second rib end below the heart, which is Juque (CV14). Also moxa the Hand Jueyin Pericardium and Hand Shaoyin Heart channels, three moxa cones each.
Spleen Epilepsy presents with a yellow complexion, abdominal distension, and frequent dysentery/diarrhea. Moxa the Stomach Guan area, three moxa cones. Moxa two cones beside the Stomach Guan. Moxa the Foot Yangming Stomach and Foot Taiyin Spleen channels, two moxa cones each.
Lung Epilepsy presents with a pale face and mouth, and foaming at the mouth. Moxa Feishu (BL13), three moxa cones. Also moxa the Hand Yangming Large Intestine and Hand Taiyin Lung channels, two moxa cones each.
Kidney Epilepsy presents with a black complexion, fixed staring gaze without movement, resembling a corpse. Moxa two cun and two fen below the heart, three moxa cones. Also moxa the arterial pulse at the elbow, two moxa cones each. Also moxa the Foot Taiyang Bladder and Foot Shaoyin Kidney channels, two moxa cones each.
Diaphragm Epilepsy presents with upward staring eyes and inability to move the limbs. Moxa Fengfu (GV16). Also moxa the vertex midline, Renzhong (GV28), and Chengjiang (CV24) below the lower lip, with the number of cones determined by age.
Intestinal Epilepsy presents with immobility. Moxa both Chengshan (BL57) points. Also moxa the sole of the foot and Laogong (PC8) on both hands. Also moxa the Wanggu (GB12) behind both ears, with cones determined by age. Also moxa Zhongwan (CV12) [Note: Text says Umbilicus/Qi Zhong], fifty moxa cones.
These are the syndromes of the Five Zang Epilepsies.
Horse Epilepsy presents with an open mouth, head shaking, horse-like cries, and opisthotonos. Moxa Fengfu (GV16) and the umbilicus, three moxa cones each. If the pathology is in the abdomen, burn horse hoof powder and administer orally for good effect.
Ox Epilepsy presents with fixed staring eyes and abdominal distension. Moxa Jiawei (CV15) and Dazhui (GV14), three moxa cones each. Burn ox hoof powder and administer orally for good effect.
Sheep Epilepsy presents with wide-open eyes and protruding tongue. Moxa three cones above Dazhui (GV14).
Pig Epilepsy presents with excessive salivation. Moxa Wanggu (GB12) on both sides, one cun lateral, three moxa cones each.
Dog Epilepsy presents with limb contracture. Moxa the center of both hands, one cone. Moxa the Foot Taiyang channel, one cone. Moxa the Rib Door (Leihu), one cone.
Chicken Epilepsy presents with head shaking and opisthotonos, fearfulness, and self-shaking. Moxa all Foot Yang channels, three moxa cones each.
These are the syndromes of the Six Livestock Epilepsies.
For sudden infantile epilepsy, moxa both nipples. For female infants, moxa two fen below the nipple.
To treat sudden infantile epilepsy characterized by a stiff body like death and borborygmus in the abdomen, moxa Taicang (CV10) and six points around the umbilicus (one cun above, below, left, right). Also, measure the abdominal width against the back: wrap a string from under the neck to the umbilicus, transfer it to the back along the spine to the end of the string, and moxa one cun lateral to the spine at the string's end, five moxa cones each side.
If the face is white and the cry voice remains unchanged, moxa the Foot Yangming and Foot Taiyin channels.
If the eyes roll upward and the pupils move, moxa the center of the anterior fontanelle. To locate: Measure horizontally from corner to corner of the mouth. Measure horizontally across the nose base. Remove half the nasal measurement, combine with the oral measurement as the standard. Measure upward from the frontal hairline using this standard. The point is directly above the fontanelle in the unossified bone, moving with the hand. This is the most critical point. Next, moxa two fen inside the frontal hairline, aligned vertically with the nose. Next, moxa both sides, two fen inside the hairline directly above the pupils. Next, moxa the vertex whorl. Next, moxa Keyuren (ST7) at the arterial pulse behind the eyebrow. Next, moxa both Ermen (TE21), located where the jaw joint opens and creates a depression. Next, moxa above both ears, locating the point by rolling up the ear. Alternatively, for adults, place three fingers horizontally above the ear; for infants, use their own finger width. Next, moxa the blue veins above Wanggu (GB12) behind both ears; needle pricking to bleed is also effective. Next, moxa Yuzhen (GB9), the prominent bone at the back of the neck. Next, moxa both Fengchi (GB20), in the depressions outside the tendons of the sternocleidomastoid at the hairline. Next, moxa Fengfu (GV16), at the midline of the nape hairline, level with Fengchi. Next, moxa the two corners of the head, the bones rising from the sides of the vertex whorl.
There are nineteen points on the head. For a ten-day-old infant, moxa three cones; thirty days old, five cones; fifty days old, seven cones. Severe cases require moxa at all points. Mild cases only require moxa at Xianzhong (Baihui GV20), Fengchi (GB20), and Yuzhen (GB9). Use aged mugwort. Ensure the moxa cone is flat and makes full contact with the skin so the heat penetrates to the pathology. Fresh mugwort or uneven cones that do not touch the skin render moxa ineffective regardless of quantity.
If there is abdominal fullness, shortness of breath, and intestinal rumbling, moxa the Lung Mu point (Feishu BL13 is Back-Shu, here likely referring to a front-mu equivalent or specific chest point, text says "Lung Mu" located in the second intercostal space above the nipples, aligned with the pupil). Next, moxa Danzhong (CV17). Next, moxa Xiong tang. Next, moxa the umbilicus (Qi Zhong CV8). Next, moxa Bixi, located in the first intercostal space below the nipples. Next, moxa Juque (CV14). For adults, this is one cun below Jiwei (CV15); for infants, it is six fen from the umbilicus, one cun below Jiwei. Moxa both sides. Next, moxa Weiwuan. Next, moxa Jinmen, located centrally behind the scrotum and anterior to the anus, measured from the scrotum to the anus midpoint.
There are twelve points on the abdomen. For Xiong tang, Juque, and Weiwuan: ten-day-old infants moxa three cones; infants over one month moxa five cones. The perineal seam moxa three cones, or follow the "age-determined cones" rule.
If there is spinal rigidity and opisthotonos, moxa Dazhui (GV14). Also moxa all Zang Back-Shu points and the Du Meridian on the spine. Measure from Dazhui to the coccyx, fold in the middle, and measure again from Dazhui to mark the Du Meridian points.
There are twelve points on the back. Ten-day-old infants moxa three cones; infants over one month moxa five cones.
If there are limb convulsions and fright, moxa Chize (LU5). Next, moxa the Yangming channel. Next, moxa Shaoshang (LU11). Next, moxa Laogong (PC8). Next, moxa the Heart Master (Pericardium) channel. Next, moxa Hegu (LI4). Next, moxa Sanjian (LI3). Next, moxa the Shaoyang channel.
There are sixteen points on the hands. The key points are Yangming, Shaoshang, Heart Master, Chize, Hegu, and Shaoyang. Cone counts are as above.
Also moxa Futu (ST32). Next, moxa Sanli (ST36). Next, moxa the gastrocnemius area. Next, moxa Luxi. Next, moxa the Yangming channel. Next, moxa the Shaoyang channel. Next, moxa Ran gu (KI7).
There are fourteen points on the feet, all important for moxa. Cone counts are as above. The Hand and Foot Yangming channels correspond to four fingers' width. All these points are indicated for infantile fright and epilepsy. If wind pathology is severe...
