(A Treatise)
It is stated: The anus serves as the pathway for the transmission of waste, governed by the Lung and Large Intestine, and is metaphorically referred to as the "Messenger Official" (a minor official responsible for conveying messages). It weighs twelve liang, measures one chi two cun in length, and two cun two fen in width, corresponding to the twelve double-hours of a day. If the internal organs are injured by heat, it may result in anal obstruction with constipation, or swelling, retraction, and ulceration. If the fu-organs are affected by cold, it may lead to anal laxity with profuse diarrhea, prolapse of the anus which returns only after a long time. For heat patterns, unblocking methods should be employed; for cold patterns, tonifying methods should be used. Balance should be restored based on deficiency and excess, following the meridians for regulation (see formulas in Volume 24).
(A Treatise, Two Formulas)
It is stated: The zang-fu organs internally correspond to the bone marrow and externally connect with the skin, hair, flesh, and muscles. If pathogens enter from the exterior, they cause obstruction and stiffness in the skin, hair, flesh, and muscles. If pathology originates from the interior, it causes pain in the bone marrow. Therefore, the relationship between yin-yang, exterior-interior, inner marrow, and outer skin requires detailed investigation. Deficiency in the skin manifests as cold, while excess in the skin manifests as heat. Determining the deficiency or excess of the skin primarily relates to the Lung and Large Intestine. When disease arises in the skin and hair, heat patterns tend to affect the zang-organs, while cold patterns tend to affect the fu-organs.
Formula for Treating Skin Deficiency Involving Cold Qi Obstruction of the Large Intestine:
Suo Luo Gen Ye (Folium et Radix Datiscae Canescens, cut into pieces, three sheng) Shi Chang Pu Ye (Folium Acori Tatarinowii, cut into pieces, three sheng) Tao Ye Pi Zhi (Folium, Cortex et Ramulus Persicae, three sheng) Xi Kang (Fine Bran, one dou) Shu Mi (Frumentum Sorghi Vulgaris, three sheng)
Take the above five herbs, add fifteen dan five dou of water, and boil until the rice is cooked. Store in a large basin. Place a small bamboo bed over the basin opening. Sit on the bamboo bed, shielding the surrounding area with mats to block wind, and cover the body with quilts. If shortness of breath occurs, open the hole to vent the steam. Aim for generalized sweating lasting approximately the time it takes to eat two meals. Repeat this for three days. Use the steamed medicinal liquid when warm. If the water in the basin is not hot enough, place charcoal fire beneath the basin. This formula not only treats cold but also addresses all conditions of chronic cold and fatigue affecting the skin.
Formula for Treating Skin Excess Involving Heat Qi of the Lung:
Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae, two liang) Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, two liang) Da Qing (Radix Isatidis, two liang) Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, two liang) Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, two liang) Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, two liang) Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, one sheng) Dan Zhu Ye (Folium Lophatheri, cut into pieces, one sheng) Xuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae, one sheng)
Take the above ten herbs, add nine sheng of water, and decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid. Strain out the dregs, add Mang Xiao, and divide into three doses.
