(One Treatise, Fifteen Prescriptions)
The treatise states: There are cases of congenital bromhidrosis (fox odor), and cases where the odor is acquired from others. Congenital cases are difficult to cure, while acquired cases are easier to cure. However, one must use aged vinegar for three years, apply Fenshi San (Alum Stone Powder) continuously without stopping, and simultaneously take Wuxiang Wan (Five-Spice Pill), so that recovery can be achieved. Do not believe that a single application will lead to a cure; it only provides temporary relief. (Wuxiang Wan is found in Volume Six of the preceding text.) Generally, individuals with bromhidrosis must avoid consuming Youcai (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis) and Five Pungent Spices; otherwise, the condition will never be cured throughout their life.
Prescription for treating bromhidrosis.
Duanshi (Calcined Alum Stone, 1 sheng) Fengxiang (Liquidambar, also known as Chenxiang/Sandalwood in some versions) Dingxiang (Clove) Xunluxiang (Olibanum/Frankincense) Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (each 2 liang) Fanshi (Alumen/Alum Stone, 4 liang) Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Yangqishi (Yangqi Stone/Ochre) (each 3 liang)
Process the above eight ingredients by crushing and sieving them. Make a plug from cotton cloth, approximately as thick as a finger and four cun long. Spread the medicinal powder onto the cloth plug, place it in a silk pouch, and insert it into the axilla. First, wipe the area with a cloth until it feels painful, then clamp the pouch in place.
Another prescription: Mix Duanshi (Calcined Alum Stone) with three-year-old sour vinegar and apply externally.
Prescription for treating bromhidrosis:
Xinyi (Magnolia Flower) Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) Duheng (Peucedani Radix) Ben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 2 fen)
Process the above five ingredients by chopping them. Soak them in strong sour wine overnight, decoct to obtain the juice, and apply externally. Apply before going to bed, continuing until cured.
Another prescription: Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) Duanshi (Calcined Alum Stone) (each 1 liang) Fanshi (Alumen/Alum Stone) (0.5 liang)
Process the above four ingredients into a powder. Mix this powder with face powder and apply frequently.
Another prescription: Take Chi Tong Xie (Red Copper Shavings), mix with vinegar, stir-fry in a silver vessel until extremely hot. Wrap in cloth and apply as a hot compress to the axilla. Replace when cool.
Another prescription: Cut Hu Ye (Oak Leaf) to 3 sheng. Boil in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng. Wash the axilla with this liquid. Then, burn Bai Ku Hu (White Bitter Gourd) until smoke emerges and fumigate the axilla. Repeat frequently.
Another prescription: Xinyi (Magnolia Flower) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (each 4 fen)
Process the above four ingredients by crushing and sieving. After fumigation, apply powder.
Another prescription: Take a bundle of Machi Cai (Portulaca Oleracea), crush it, and mix with honey to form a ball. Place it in a silk bag, wrap it in mud-paper to a thickness of half a cun, and dry it in the sun. Roast it over fire until cooked. Break open, retrieve the contents, mix with a small amount of honey to keep it warm (do not let it cool). First, wipe the axilla with raw cloth, clamp the medicine between the arms. Endure the pain as long as possible; if unbearable, squeeze both axillae with hands.
Another prescription: Niu Zhi (Bovine Fat) Hufen (Lead Carbonate/White Lead) (equal parts)
Decoct the above two ingredients until they can be formed into pills. Apply to the axilla overnight for recovery. Do not exceed three doses.
Another prescription: Fulonggan (Dragon's House Earth/Pile-dwelling Soil) mixed with water into a paste and applied externally.
