[Pathogenesis] Danzhen (Dan Rash) is characterized by unchanged skin color, absence of heat sensation, and the appearance of Yinzhen (urticaria-like wheals). These wheals are contiguous and mildly pruritic, hence the name Danzhen. (From Volume 31)
*Qianjin Yi Fang* Prescriptions for Treating Danzhen and Yinzhen.
Boil dairy products (Lao) with salt, heat it, and apply/massage onto the affected area; it will subside immediately upon application.
Another Prescription:
Boil the roots and leaves of Angelica dahurica (Baizhi), use the decoction to wash the affected area; effective.
Another Prescription:
Crush Shenhuye (Aconitum coreanum leaves or similar herb depending on context, literally "Caution Fire Leaf") and apply as a poultice; miraculous effect.
Another Prescription:
Take one stalk of Mugwort (Ai Hao) candle stem. Locate it carefully with both hands and press it against a wall. Extend ten fingers. Align the tip of the middle finger with the stem. Apply a large moxa cone to burn the stem. Stop when the stem breaks. Moxibustion on ten sites leads to cure. If it recurs later, repeat this moxibustion method for permanent cure.
*Qianjin Fang* states: For Chi Zhen (Red Rash), it appears when hot and subsides when cold. For Bai Zhen (White Rash), it appears during cloudy and cold weather.
Prescription for Bai Zhen:
Wipe the affected area with a decoction of Alum (Bai Fan) boiled in water. Alternatively, bathe in a decoction of Fern (Shuodai) with a little wine. Alternatively, wipe with Stone Nan Ye (Pieris japonica) boiled in wine. Alternatively, wipe with juice from chicken manure boiled in water. Alternatively, wipe with juice from Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi). The treatment method is the same as that for Danzhen. (*Jiyan Fang* is identical.)
Another Prescription:
Powderized Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu), taken orally with wine, one fangcun bi (a measure of volume) per dose, three times daily. Consume five jin total.
Another Prescription:
Filter the juice of calcined stone (Duanshi) and soak/wash the affected area.
Another Prescription:
Decoct the roots and leaves of Angelica dahurica (Baizhi) to make a soup, and wash the affected area.
Another Prescription:
Powderized Mustard Seed (Jiezi), taken orally with vinegar-fermented rice water, one fangcun bi per dose, three times daily until cured.
Another Prescription for treating red urticaria on the body accompanied by itching, where scratching causes immediate swelling:
Dongxiang Cao (Dichroa febrifuga root or similar, here listed as Mangcao - *Note: Mangcao usually refers to Daphne odora, but context suggests toxic herbs often used externally*) (2 fen)
Angelica sinensis (Danggui)
Ligusticum chuanxiong (Xiong)
Rhododendron molle (Zhi Zhu Hua)
Euphorbia pekinensis (Daji)
Asarum sieboldii (Xixin)
Paeonia lactiflora (Shaoyao)
Genkwa flos (Yuanhua)
Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi, processed)
Sichuan pepper (Shujiao) (4 fen each)
Lard (Zhu Zhi) (2.5 sheng)
Cut the above eleven ingredients. Decoct them together with lard. Wait until Fuzi turns yellow and the ointment is ready. Filter out the dregs. Store and apply to the diseased area. Three times daily. Continue until cured.
Another Prescription:
Alum (Fanshi) 2 liang, steeped in 3 sheng of wine until dissolved. Wipe onto the affected area for immediate cure.
*Yannian Fang* Pills for Treating Red and White Rashes:
Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu) (1 jin)
Vitex trifolia (Manjingzi) (4 fen)
Saposhnikovia divaricata (Fangfeng) (4 fen)
Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi, processed) (2 fen)
Cinnamon twig heart (Guixin) (2 fen)
Grind the above five herbs into powder. Mix with honey to form pills the size of a wutong seed. Take 10 pills orally with wine, twice daily. Gradually increase to 15 pills. If prepared as a powder, take one qianbi. This is the standard prescription for Fengzhen (Wind Rash). All wind rashes arise from pre-existing wind pathogens in the body; therefore, Guixin and Fuzi are indispensable in this formula. Since Baizhu is used in the amount of one jin... [Text implies emphasis on warming yang and dispelling wind]. Regarding Chi Zhen, it is often due to slight deficiency in the Heart, with heat qi clashing, resulting in red coloration. It is suitable to use Magnesium Sulfate (Mangxiao) decoction for wiping.
Magnesium Sulfate (Mangxiao) (3 liang)
Take one sheng of water, dissolve the Mangxiao in it. Dip a cloth in the solution and wipe the rash. It will gradually disappear. Prepare a new batch when the liquid is exhausted. (The previous two prescriptions for red and white rashes were cited from Xu Chong's collection, Volume 13).
*Gujin Luyan* states: Chi Zhen arises because cold-dampness injures the muscle layer. Severe cases transform into heat, and excessive heat forms Chi Zhen. Symptoms worsen in hot weather and improve with cooling. Treatment Prescription:
Take fresh She Xian Cao (Omphalopus japonicus or similar), crush it thoroughly, and apply to the affected area. Most effective. (*Jiyan Fang* and *Duanji Fang* are identical.)
Regarding Bai Zhen: It arises because wind-pathogen injures the heat within the muscle layer. Heat and wind clash, forming Bai Zhen. Symptoms worsen during cloudy/rainy/cold weather and in windy conditions. They improve in sunny/warm weather and when the body is kept warm by clothing. Treatment Prescription:
Decoct Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) and wipe the affected area; this is good. Alternatively, grind into powder, heat it, wrap in blue cloth, and apply as a hot compress. (*Jiyan Fang* is identical, from Volume 30).
