Guangji treats postpartum emaciation and weakness with panting and fatigue, or alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, termed "labor injury" (Lao Sun). The Pig Kidney Decoction formula is as follows:
Pig Kidney (one piece, fat removed, cut into four parts) Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean Paste, 1 sheng) Baijingmi (White Glutinous Rice, 1 sheng) Congbai (Scallion White, cut, 1 sheng) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 2 liang).
The above six ingredients are chopped. Boil in 1 dou of water until 3 sheng remains. Strain the dregs. Divide into doses of 7 ge each, adjusting according to the patient's condition. Avoid heavy meats, hot noodles, and garlic. (From Volume 3; Cui Shi states to boil in 3 dou of water until 5 sheng remains, and drink at a comfortable temperature.)
Jiuji treats postpartum emaciation that fails to recover, aiming to restore flesh and complexion.
Select plump black soybeans, wipe clean, and roast thoroughly as if making Douhuang (fermented soybean cake). Remove the skins, grind into powder, and sift. Mix with rendered lard from the twelfth lunar month to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 50 pills with wine, twice daily. Within one month, the body will become plump and fair. No dietary restrictions apply.
Gujin Luyan treats various postpartum conditions resulting in emaciation, aiming to restore flesh and complexion and harmonize diet. The Rehmannia and Mutton Fat Decoction formula is as follows:
Shengdihuangzhi (Fresh Juice of Rehmanniae Radix, 1 sheng) Shengjiangzhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 5 sheng) Yangzhi (Mutton Fat, 2 jin) Baimi (White Honey, 5 sheng).
For the above four ingredients, first decoct the Rehmannia juice until 5 sheng remains. Add mutton fat and decoct until reduced by half. Then add ginger juice, followed by honey. Transfer to a copper vessel and simmer in a water bath until it resembles maltose syrup. On an empty stomach, take a piece the size of a chicken egg, dissolve it in 1 sheng of wine, and drink. Three times daily yields good results.
Shenshi treats postpartum wind-stroke characterized by trismus (lockjaw) and unconsciousness. The Small Du Huo Decoction formula is as follows:
Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 8 liang) Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 6 liang) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, prepared with honey, 2 liang).
Chop the above four ingredients. Boil in 9 sheng of water until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. Mild sweating is desirable. Observe usual dietary prohibitions. (From Volume 6.)
Duanju Da Dou Zi Tang (Great Soya Bean Purple Decoction) primarily treats severe postpartum wind-stroke in women, presenting with rigidity of the back, trismus, or merely irritability, heat, and bitter thirst; heaviness of the head and body; pruritus; or in severe cases, vomiting, regurgitation, and staring fixedly. These symptoms are caused by wind, cold, and dampness.
Roast 3 sheng of soya beans. Prepare a vessel in advance. Pour 5 sheng of clear wine over the hot beans. Strain out the beans and consume the remaining liquid entirely. Cover warmly to induce mild sweating. Recovery occurs when the body becomes slightly moist. This method expels wind and resolves blood stasis. For example, Zhou Decheng’s wife suffered fetal death after trauma during pregnancy; after three days of critical illness, she recovered upon taking this wine. Subsequent treatments were also successful. (Qianjin Fang uses 5 sheng of soya beans and 8 sheng of wine. It also suggests combining with Du Huo Decoction because postpartum deficiency makes one susceptible to wind; Du Huo expels wind and invigorates blood. Severe cases require ten doses. Cui Shi adds that for trismus similar to wind-stroke, adding 2 sheng of chicken droppings white and roasting with beans is better.)
Another prescription for postpartum wind-cold invasion causing whole-body coldness and stiffness, trismus, and unconsciousness:
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 4 liang), Jiu (Wine, 2 sheng). Decoct until 1 sheng remains. Strain and take in one dose. Observe usual prohibitions.
