[Background Information]
Book Title: Waitai Miyao (Secret Essentials from the Outer Cabinet)
Author: Wang Tao
Dynasty: Tang Dynasty, Tianbao 11th Year
Chapter: Four Formulas for Vomiting and Regurgitation / Seven Formulas for Hiccups
Category: Formulas
[Translation]
Regarding the etiology of vomiting and hiccups, these conditions arise because the Spleen and Stomach are affected by pathogenic factors, leading to the failure of food Qi to digest. When the Stomach is affected by pathogens, the Qi rebels upward, resulting in vomiting; when the Spleen is affected, the Spleen becomes distended and its Qi rebels upward. If this rebellious Qi meets coldness which obstructs it, causing the Qi flow to become blocked and unable to proceed smoothly, hiccups occur. (From Volume 21)
Guangji Fang [Formulas from Guangji Hospital]: Jupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction) for treating persistent vomiting and hiccups.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 sheng) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 8 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, processed with honey/fire) Pipaye (Eriobotryae Folium, 4 liang, hairs wiped off, processed with honey/fire)
Cut the above four herbs. Add 5 sheng of water, decoct until 2.5 sheng remains. Strain to remove dregs. Divide into three warm doses. The interval between each dose should be equivalent to the time a person walks six or seven li. Avoid consuming Haizao (Sargassum Herba) and Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis). (From Volume 1)
Zhouhou Fang [Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies]: Formula for vomiting and hiccups.
Take fresh Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) vines, break them, catch the exuding juice in a vessel, and drink 1 sheng. Fresh Ge Gen vines are especially good.
Another formula:
Pipaye (Eriobotryae Folium, 1 jin), wipe off hairs and process with honey. Add 1 dou of water, decoct until 3 sheng remains. Divide into two doses. (Also found in Beiji Qianjin Yaofang [Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies], from Volume 1)
Bixiao Fang [Effective Formulas]: Formula for vomiting and hiccups.
Take Lugen (Phragmitis Rhizoma, 5 liang), cut it, add 5 sheng of water, decoct until 3 sheng remains. Take as a single dose. Also consume 1 liang he of Tongzi Xiaoniao (Urine of an uncircumcised boy). It will heal within no more than three doses. (From Volume 2)
Etiology: When both the Spleen and Stomach are deficient and affected by Wind pathogens, new food entering the Stomach cannot be transported and transformed. Consequently, the Qi of the grain interferes with the newly ingested food, causing Stomach Qi to rebel. Rebellious Stomach Qi leads to Spleen distension; Spleen distension causes Qi rebellion. If met with cold obstruction, hiccups result. A pulse that is deep and deficient at the Guan position on the right hand indicates a tendency toward hiccups. (From Volume 21)
Zhouhou Fang: Formula for sudden persistent hiccups.
Firmly pinch the center of the eyebrows while holding the breath.
Another formula:
Stimulate the nasal cavity with an object, or insert a small amount of Zaogeng (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) powder into the nose to induce sneezing, which will cure the condition.
Another formula:
Simply hold the breath and press/pull downwards.
Another formula:
Decoct 2 sheng of high-quality Chidou (Cajani Semen, prepared as Douchi) to obtain the juice, and take it. (Same as Qianjin Fang)
Another formula:
Take 2 sheng of Zimi Fen (Millet Flour), take with Jinghua Shui (well water drawn early in the morning). (All from Volume 3)
Jiyan Fang [Verified Experiences]: Formula for sudden hiccups.
Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 3 pieces), roast, remove seeds, and crush. Add 1 sheng of milk from three households and 5 liang of Yangzhi (Sheep Fat). Boil the Zhi Shi until boiling, then add the milk and boil again. Strain to remove dregs. Hold in the mouth and swallow slowly. (Same as Fan Wang's formulas, from Volume 6)
Zhang Wenzhong and Tao Shi's formula:
Drink several sheng of freshly drawn well water. This is preferable. (Same as Zhouhou Beiji Qianjin Fang, from Volume 6)
