Xu Renze discusses: Cough disease has several types: there is heat cough, cold cough, lung qi cough, and fluid-retention cough. Heat cough occurs in young people with strong strength and full constitution, caused by improper care leading to heat injury and accumulated heat; thus it results in heat cough. This type can be relieved simply by avoiding cold food and drink and using medication to suppress it. Cold cough occurs in elderly people with weak strength and deficient vital qi, further caused by cold injury from sleep and diet; thus it becomes cold cough. This type can be restored to normal by proper care keeping warm and taking warm medications. Lung qi cough affects all ages; those with chronic upper heat who subsequently suffer heat injury from improper dietary care will have continuous coughing. Over years, lung qi declines becoming qi cough. If not treated early, this becomes fei wei (lung atrophy). Once reached, it is mostly incurable. Fluid-retention cough is caused by ingested fluids stagnating and clarifying in the chest; water qi rushes upward into the lung. The lung receiving this qi forms cough. If not eliminated over time, it gradually becomes water qi disease. This condition is also difficult to treat. The manifestation of heat cough involves no other symptoms, only flaring up upon exposure to heat; it is suitable to combine with Shengdihuang et Qiwei Tang (Rehmannia and Seven Herbs Decoction).
Shengdihuang (Fresh Rehmannia Root, Radix Rehmanniae Recens), one sheng, cut; Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), two he, cut; Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark, Cortex Mori Radicis), cut one sheng; Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome, Rhizoma Belamcandae), cut two sheng; Gange (Kudzu Root, Radix Puerariae), cut six he; Zisu (Perilla Leaf, Folium Perillae), three he; Zhuli (Bamboo Sap, Succus Bambusae), one sheng.
The above seven herbs are finely cut, boiled in ten dou of water to obtain three sheng of decoction, strained, and Zhuli is added and stirred well. Take long after meals, dividing one dose into four servings. If feeling effective, continue taking. For mild illness, three or four doses will cure. Avoid Wuyi.
Again, following the aforementioned Shengdihuang et Qiwei Yin, although temporarily cured, relapse may occur later; it is suitable to combine with Ziwan et Shiwei Wan (Aster and Ten Herbs Pill).
Ziwan (Aster Root, Radix Asteris), five fen; Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark, Cortex Mori Radicis), six he; Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome, Rhizoma Belamcandae), four liang; Bubaigen (Stemona Root, Radix Stemonae), five liang; Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, Herba Ephedrae), two liang, nodes removed; Gange (Kudzu Root, Radix Puerariae), five liang; Digupi (Lycium Bark, Cortex Lycii); Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, Rhizoma Cimicifugae), each four liang; Gan Dihuang (Dried Rehmannia Root, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), six liang; Mangxiao (Mirabilite, Natrii Sulfas), six liang.
The above herbs are pounded and sifted, mixed with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Administer with Zhuli. Initial dose fifteen pills, twice daily, gradually increasing to thirty pills. Avoid Wuyi.
Regarding cold cough, it flares up upon exposure to various cold factors. For such cases, it is suitable to use Dazao et Qiwei Tang (Jujube and Seven Herbs Decoction).
Da Ganzao (Large Dried Jujube, Fructus Jujubae), thirty kernels, split; Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Inner Bark, Ramulus Cinnamomi), four liang; Xingren (Apricot Seed, Semen Armeniacae Amarum), one hundred kernels, tips, skins, and double-kernel ones removed, ground; Xixin (Asarum Root, Radix Asari); Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, Fructus Evodiae); Danggui (Angelica Root, Radix Angelicae Sinensis), each three liang.
The above herbs are cut, boiled in eight sheng of water to obtain two sheng and six he of decoction, strained, taken warm in three doses. Advance one dose every time a person walks ten li. Feeling strength after one dose, three or four doses are good. Take one dose every three or four days. This decoction originally lacked one herb. Avoid raw scallion, raw vegetables.
Again, taking the aforementioned Dazao Tang helps but does not eradicate the root cause; relapse occurs upon cold exposure. It is suitable to combine with Danggui et Shiwei Wan (Angelica and Ten Herbs Pill).
Danggui (Angelica Root, Radix Angelicae Sinensis), cut; Xixin (Asarum Root, Radix Asari); Gancao (Licorice Root, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), prepared by stir-frying, each five liang; Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Inner Bark, Ramulus Cinnamomi); Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, Fructus Evodiae); Renshen (Ginseng Root, Radix Ginseng), each three liang; Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper Fruit, Fructus Schisandrae/Szechuanensis - *Note: Context implies Zanthoxylum*), three he, sweating; JuPi (Tangerine Peel, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae); Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, Rhizoma Zingiberis), each four liang; Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark, Cortex Mori Radicis), eight liang.
The above herbs are pounded and sifted, mixed with honey to form pills. Administer with boiled Ganzao tea. Initial dose ten pills, twice daily, gradually increasing to thirty pills, size of wutong seeds. After taking these pills for three to five days, feeling heat, eat a few mouthfuls of porridge long after medication to suppress it. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, raw scallion, raw vegetables.
Lung qi cough persisting for a long time may develop into fei wei (lung atrophy). Symptoms are not limited by seasonal cold or heat; coughing continues day and night. Sputum is white like snow, fine foam, thick and sticky. Panting and qi rebellion occur. Alternating chills and fever, attacks at specific times. Lips, mouth, throat, and tongue are dry and scorched. Sometimes hemoptysis occurs. Gradual emaciation, red urine, cyanotic-white complexion, erect body hair. This also indicates internal steaming heat. For such symptoms, it is suitable to combine with Baiqian et Qiwei Tang (Peucedanum and Seven Herbs Decoction), along with Mahuang et Shiwei Wan (Ephedra and Ten Herbs Pill) and Sangbaipi et Shiwei Jian (Mulberry Root Bark and Ten Herbs Decoction).
If lung qi cough persists and develops into fei yong (lung abscess), symptoms are similar to fei wei, except sputum becomes entirely purulent, discharged in varying amounts. For such patients, add Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, Rhizoma Pinelliae), five liang, and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, Radix Scutellariae), three liang to Baiqian Tang. Boil in ten dou of water to obtain two sheng and eight he. Add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, Radix Scutellariae), five liang, Kushen (Sophora Root, Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), six liang, and Shaoyao (Peony Root, Radix Paeoniae Alba), three liang to Mahuang Wan. Add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, Radix Scutellariae), cut three sheng, to Sangbaipi Jian, decoct together with Sangbaipi and Digupi, adding three sheng of water for joint decoction.
