According to *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), coughing with pus and blood results from damage to the Lung and injury to the Heart. The Lung governs Qi, and the Heart governs Blood. When the Lung is affected by Cold, mild cases result in cough; if the Yin meridians are injured, bleeding occurs. Blood and Qi travel together. When coughing becomes extremely severe, it injures the Blood and disturbs the Qi. Both ascend and invade the Lung, where they contend with Body Fluids (Jin-Ye). This accumulation and stagnation transform into pus, thus causing cough with pus and blood. (From Volume XIV)
