According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): Heartache accompanied by excessive salivation is caused by retained fluid (pathological accumulation of body fluids due to metabolic dysfunction) invading the collaterals of the heart. Retained fluid refers to the abnormal accumulation of water and fluids. The Qi of the heart connects with the mouth; the heart and the small intestine are exterior-interior paired, both symbolizing Fire in the Five Elements. The small intestine is the fu-organ of the heart; its water Qi flows downward into the small intestine to become urine and feces, thus preventing retained fluid from stagnating in the heart's collaterals. The bladder and the kidney both symbolize Water; the bladder is the fu-organ of the kidney, primarily responsible for storing Jin-Ye (body fluids). The fluid of the kidney manifests upward as saliva, and the Qi of the kidney flows downward to the genitalia. If the zang-fu organs are harmonious and peaceful, water fluids flow downward and are excreted smoothly. However, if cold and heat pathogens interact, causing disharmony among the zang-fu organs, Jin-Ye and water drinks will stagnate and accumulate, pressing upward against the heart. This prevents the Qi of the heart from being unimpeded and smooth, resulting in heartache and excessive salivation. (From Volume 16)
*Fan Wang Fang* treats heartache caused by cold and heat intermingling in the chest, with clear saliva filling the mouth, frequent urge to vomit, and indigestion. Formula for Ganjiang Wan:
Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 1 fen) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig, 1 fen) Fanshi (Alum, 1 fen, calcined until juice is exhausted) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 fen) Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, 1 fen)
The above five herbs are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of soybeans. Take two pills per dose, three times a day. If ineffective, gradually increase the dosage until the desired effect is achieved. Avoid raw green onions, mutton, and maltose. (From Volume 18)
*Jiyan Fang* treats heartache with excessive salivation resembling worms.
Take the hearts of six domestic animals (cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, dogs, chickens), slice them fresh according to availability into four pieces. Cut each piece once longitudinally and once transversely with a knife. Place a small amount of real Cinnabar (Zhenshashi) inside, and swallow it on an empty stomach at dawn. The parasites will die, and the disease will be cured. If real Cinnabar is unavailable, Realgar (Xionghuang) or Musk (Shexiang) may be used. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* records: cut into fourteen pieces, make longitudinal and transverse cuts, mix one liang of real Dan (Cinnabar) powder into the cuts, and swallow all at dawn. Adding Realgar and Musk is better. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* and *Jingxin Lu* agree. From Volume 1. Note: Consider whether raw consumption is safe.)
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: The heart and small intestine are exterior-interior paired and both symbolize Fire, which belongs to Yang Qi. The heart is the master of the five zang organs, so the main meridians generally do not accept pathogenic factors. If injured by pathogens leading to pain, death may ensue; if branch collaterals are invaded by wind pathogens leading to pain, it may persist for a long time and manifest as rashes. The sensation of hanging, urgent pain with inner restlessness and vexation occurs because pathogens force upon Yang Qi, preventing it from flowing freely. Stagnation and blood stasis generate heat, causing the heart to feel suspended, urgent, vexed, restless, and painful. (From Volume 16)
In Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun*: For subcardiac hanging pain accompanied by various rebellious symptoms and severe deficiency of Zheng Qi (Upright Qi), use Guixin Shengjiang Zhishi Tang. Formula:
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig, 3 liang) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 liang) Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, 5 pieces, roasted)
The above three herbs are chopped. Boil in 6 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of decoction. Remove dregs. Divide into three warm doses. Avoid raw green onions. (Same as *Fan Wang Fang*, From Volume 15)
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* Jiangfu Wan Formula:
Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, 2 liang, processed) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 1 liang)
The above two herbs are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of Chinese quince seeds. Take four pills per dose. Swallow with wine or water. Three times a day. Avoid pork and cold water. (This formula treats cold pain caused by injury and disturbance of the heart and lungs. From Volume 1)
*Gujin Luyan Fang* treats heartache with restlessness and oppression, throbbing pain radiating to both breasts, or stabbing pain, accompanied by extreme fatigue. Formula for Guixin Tang:
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig, 0.5 liang) Zhuyu (Evodia Fruit, 2 liang) Shaoyao (Peony Root, 3 liang) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, 2 liang) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 0.5 jin; if unavailable, substitute with 5 liang of Ganjiang/Dried Ginger)
The above five herbs are chopped. Boil in 12 dou of water to obtain 4 sheng of decoction. Take 1 sheng per dose. Take three times during the day and once at night. It is effective. Avoid raw green onions. (From Volume 8)
*Qianjin Fang* treats epigastric fullness (Pi) and hanging pain caused by various rebellious Qi. Use Guixin Sanwu Tang. Formula:
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig, 2 liang) Jiaoyi (Maltose/Sweet Malt, 0.5 jin) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 2 liang)
Chop the above herbs. Boil the first two ingredients in 4 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of decoction. Remove dregs. Add Jiaoyi. Divide into three doses. Avoid raw green onions. (From Volume 13)
