The *Jiyan* (Collected Experiences) states that for anyone whose febrile disease has just resolved or who is recovering from a major illness, consuming pork, pig intestines, blood products, fatty fish, or greasy foods will inevitably lead to severe diarrhea. Physicians will be unable to treat it, and death will ensue. If one consumes cakes, millet and glutinous rice, malt sugar jerky, raw fish slices, roasted meats, dates, chestnuts, various fruits, and other hard-to-digest solid foods, the stomach qi remains weak and cannot digest them. This will inevitably cause internal heat to accumulate. If purgative medicines are then administered to clear this heat, it will result in cold deficiency of the stomach, making severe diarrhea uncontrollable. Not purging leads to death, while purging leads to critical danger; both are difficult to save. Many people die after febrile diseases due to these causes, so caution is essential.
When a disease has just resolved, only gruel should be consumed. It is better to eat little and remain slightly hungry than to become full. No other foods should be eaten; even if desired, they must not be given. After a period of time, as recovery progresses, mutton gruel, meat broths, rabbit meat, pheasant meat, and venison may be gradually introduced. However, pork and dog meat must absolutely be avoided.
After a new recovery, one should lie quietly and rest. One must avoid having hair combed or face washed, as this causes physical fatigue. Furthermore, one should not speak excessively or engage mental exertion. All such activities can lead to "Lao Fu" (recurrence of disease due to overexertion). For instance, Gu Zixian, a district official, had recovered from an illness but was not yet robust. He consulted Hua Tuo, who palpated his pulse and said, "Although the disease has resolved, you are still deficient and not fully restored. Your yang qi is insufficient. Do not engage in strenuous activities. General fatigue is tolerable, but sexual intercourse will lead to death, with the tongue protruding several inches before dying." His wife, hearing of his recovery, traveled over a hundred li to visit him. They stayed together and engaged in intercourse. Three days later, he fell ill, his tongue protruded several inches, and he died.
If sexual intercourse occurs within one hundred days of a new recovery, when qi and blood have not yet stabilized, death almost invariably results. Generally, sixty days after the resolution of the illness, one might be able to walk or hunt; however, engaging in sexual intercourse at this stage leads to vomiting of saliva and death. Additionally, sexual intercourse during or immediately after a febrile disease is called the disease of "Yin Yang Yi" (exchange of yin and yang), which is difficult to treat and often fatal. Recently, a scholar-official contracted a mild Shanghan (cold damage). After sweating therapy for more than ten days, he could ride a horse and believed himself recovered. Consequently, he engaged in sexual intercourse, resulting in acute abdominal pain, spasm of the limbs, and death. (From Volume II; identical content in *Qianjin Fang*)
The *Shenshi Fang* states: Regarding Tianxing Bing (epidemic infectious disease) not yet recovered, (forcing consumption of daylily causes heaviness in hands and feet; another version mentions blue flowers.) Regarding Tianxing Bing after resolution, (certain foods inevitably lead to dementia; consuming fish and meat causes stagnation of qi and failure to transform.) Regarding Tianxing Bing after resolution, (drinking alcohol and engaging in sexual intercourse leads to certain death.) Regarding damage from Tianxing Bing, if less than three months have passed, (consuming mulberry fish meat causes recurrent hematochezia; consuming salted black beans causes inability to move the limbs.) Regarding Tianxing Bing after resolution, (consuming vegetables with flowers leads to death within three days; from Volume XIV.)
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Regarding Tianxing Bing after resolution, (if less than five days have passed, consuming all types of meat and wheat noodles causes the disease to recur with exhaustion.) Regarding Tianxing Bing after resolution, (consuming mustard and raw fish sashimi leads to the formation of abscesses/ju.) Regarding Tianxing Bing after resolution, (recently drinking alcohol and consuming scallions/leeks causes the disease to recur.) Regarding newly resolved Tianxing Bing, (consuming raw fish inevitably leads to dysentery...)
