Duanju Formula for Sterilization.
Take an old piece of cloth, square or round, one chi in side length, burn it to ash, and take it with wine; this ensures lifelong infertility. (Qianjin Fang records it as an old cloth used for silkworm eggs.)
Another formula for terminating pregnancy and sterilization.
Gualou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (each 3 liang), Chishao Dou (Prepared Soybean) (1 sheng).
Cut the above three herbs, add 4 sheng of water, decoct until 1.5 sheng remains, and divide into doses for administration.
Another formula:
Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) (2 pieces), crush into powder, mix with pure vinegar, apply to the right foot, remove afterwards; this yields excellent results.
Qianjin Fang Formula for Sterilization.
Fry Shuiyin (Mercury) in oil for one day without stopping. Take a pill the size of a jujube on an empty stomach. This permanently prevents reproduction without harming the body.
Qianjin Fang states: The way of human life is such that no one does not regard nurturing the young as the great foundation. Without the young, the great cannot be formed; thus, the I Ching says, "Accumulate the small to achieve the high and solid." The Shi Jing has the verse "In the beginning, there was the people," and the Zuo Zhuan records that Shengzi gave birth to Duke Yin. This meaning implies progressing from the subtle to the manifest, from youth to adulthood, which is common knowledge visible to all, not requiring confirmation through classics and histories. Therefore, this work first addresses women and children, then adult men and the elderly, reflecting the principle of honoring the root. Children's qi and vital energy are weak; for physicians to devote themselves to treatment and achieve cures is difficult. Current students of medicine often neglect this, largely because infants within swaddling clothes emit a fishy and pungent milk odor, and physicians, maintaining noble conduct and heroic demeanor, are unwilling to look upon them. Reflecting quietly, this is indeed a cause for deep sighs. Duanju Fang states that ordinary people aged six and above are called "small" (xiao), those sixteen and above are called "young" (shao), those thirty and above are called "strong" (zhuang), and those fifty and above are called "old" (lao). Those below six years old are not recorded in medical classics; therefore, nursing infants with illnesses are difficult to treat due to lack of theoretical basis. In the middle ancient period, a man named Wu Fang compiled the Xiao'er Luxin Jing (Pediatric Cranial Fontanelle Classic) to predict premature death or longevity and judge disease outcomes. This was passed down through generations, leading to the emergence of pediatric formulas. During the Jin and Song dynasties, the Su family in Jiangzuo was highly regarded; their teachings were verified and spread among the people. In the Qi dynasty, Prince Xu also compiled three volumes of Pediatric Formulas. Thus, current students can obtain these transmissions. However, given Prince Xu's high status and prestige, he had little time to focus on pediatrics. His formulas are not particularly profound or detailed, though somewhat useful, they are not extremely secret. Now, having extensively collected various schools' methods and personally effective ones, I have compiled them into two volumes, upper and lower, for readers to consult. All households should understand the principles of nurturing the young.
