The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept in the Sleeve) method for treating accidental swallowing of a hook.
If the rope is still in hand, do not pull it forcefully. Instead, add round and smooth objects such as pearls or coix seeds onto the rope, push them along the rope slowly until they reach the hook, and then gently traction to remove it.
Another prescription:
Use a small sheep's trachea to cover the rope, push it to the location of the hook. The hook should detach, and gentle traction will allow for removal.
Yet another prescription:
Simply use a large-headed object bent into a four-directional recurved shape; gentle traction will allow for removal.
Yet another prescription:
Take one handful of *Polygonum aviculare* (Knotgrass), rinse with two sheng of water, administer via gavage, repeat more than ten times, and drink the liquid.
Another prescription for treating accidental swallowing of various wooden or bamboo hairpins:
Take a cloth knife and an old saw, heat them until red-hot, and soak them in wine. Also burn two female fingernails into powder, add them to the wine, and drink the mixture.
Yet another prescription:
If the object is a peach wood or bamboo hairpin, simply consume white sugar frequently and in large amounts; it will naturally dissolve and be expelled.
Another prescription for treating vomiting caused by silver hairpins piercing the sinews, and accidental swallowing due to inhalation that cannot be expelled:
Consume large amounts of white sugar, gradually accumulating up to ten jin. The sugar will wrap around the foreign body, allowing it to be expelled naturally. This description differs slightly from Ge Hong's *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*. (All extracted from Volume 5)
The *Shenshi Fang* method for treating accidental swallowing of a hook.
Amber bead
Thread this single ingredient onto the hook's rope, push it forward until it reaches the hook, and repeatedly push while applying traction to extract it. If beads are unavailable, use hard crystals or similar objects to rub against the rope to make it slippery for use. (Extracted from Volume 22)
The *Qianjin Fang* method for treating accidental swallowing of rings or finger entrapment:
Burn fourteen goose feathers, grind into powder, and ingest. Swan feathers are also suitable. (*Beiji Fang*, *Wenzhong Fang* concur).
Another prescription for treating choking on pearls, copper, or iron:
Heat the bronze teeth of a crossbow trigger until red-hot, place them in wine, and drink. Recovery is immediate. (Extracted from Volume 26)
Zhang Wenzhong's prescription for choking on swallowed pearls or iron:
Heat the bronze teeth of a crossbow trigger until red-hot, place them in water, and drink the juice. Recovery is immediate. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, *Beiji Fang* concur).
Another prescription for treating accidental swallowing of coins:
Crush hot charcoal into powder, take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) orally, and the coin will be expelled. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, *Duanju Fang*, *Jiyan Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, *Beiji Fang*, *Shenshi Fang* concur).
Ge Shi's prescription from *Beiji Fang* for treating accidental swallowing of hairpins:
Take scallion bulbs, sun-dry until wilted, boil until cooked without chopping. Consume one large bundle, and the hairpin will be expelled along with it. Fresh wheat leaves or *Stellaria media* (Chickweed) can also be used, with excellent efficacy. (*Qianjin Fang*, *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*...)
Another prescription for treating accidental swallowing of nails, arrowheads, gold needles, iron, etc.:
Consume large amounts of fatty mutton fat and other fatty meats; the fat will naturally wrap the foreign body for expulsion. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, *Wenzhong Fang* concur, all extracted from Volume 5).
The *Gujin Luyan* prescription for treating accidental swallowing of silver vessels or hairpins:
Take one jin of maltose syrup, consume it all at once gradually. With increased consumption, the silver items and hairpins will be expelled. (*Duanju Fang*, *Jiyan Fang*, *Qianjin Fang* concur; *Qianjin Fang* specifies white sugar).
Yet another prescription:
Take one liang of mercury, divide into doses for ingestion, and the hairpin will descend. Alternatively, mix one liang of lead carbonate (Hufen) with water, divide into two doses, and ingest to soften the silver like mud. For any swallowed gold or silver objects remaining in the abdomen, this method causes them to melt and be expelled.
Another prescription for treating accidental swallowing of needles:
Take true magnetic hematite powder capable of attracting needles, and take one fangcun bi with wine or rice water. The commentary states: Hematite has the special ability to attract needles. However, there is a query: if the needle is lodged in the throat, does ingesting the hematite powder enter the abdomen? If the hematite is held in the mouth, it might attract the needle out. These two rationales require careful consideration to determine their validity. (*Duanju Fang*, *Jiyan Fang*, *Qianjin Fang* concur, extracted from Volume 29).
