Cui's Separate Record of Moxibustion Formula for Bone Steaming with Diagrams and Preface, written by Cui Zhifu, Vice Director of the Secretariat
All spiritual beings receive their Qi (vital energy) from the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). If one's life management violates proper principles, it will invite the Six Diseases. As for the extensive records of Qibo and the Yellow Emperor, there may be old medical classics passed down. Using moxibustion therapy alone for treatment.
Women take Blood and Qi as their foundation. Regardless of age, many are infected with this disease. Infants and children, through transmission, suffer even more severely. The manifestations of this disease include: dry and erect hair, either clumped or scattered; abdominal masses in some cases; small nodules on both sides near the lower back of the head, sometimes up to five or six; night sweats during sleep, dreams of intercourse with spirits or ghosts; clear vision but weak limbs; qi rebellion upward, reduced appetite, gradually becoming emaciated and weak. Even if time is prolonged, death eventually comes suddenly. I once served as Sima (Military Governor) of Luozhou and studied the "San Neng" (Three Abilities/Theories), yet none compare to this formula in supporting critical conditions and saving emergencies. It not only targets Bone Steaming (a chronic consumptive disease similar to tuberculosis) but also treats Qi disorders, Wind disorders, miasma, fatigue, evil accumulations, or fixed masses. Since the variety of ailments is broad and the number of cures numerous, they cannot all be recorded; only a general outline is presented here. Fearing that errors might occur during transmission and mislead future generations, I have now detailed the diagrams so that readers may easily understand and disseminate them widely. This resembles a family-secret prescription, without needing to hire famous doctors from afar or seek superior medicines elsewhere. To restore the soul and revive the dead, what difficulty could there be? Those encountering this disease should certainly strive to treat it.
For moxibustion treating Bone Steaming and evil pathogens, if the patient dreams of intercourse with spirits or ghosts, there is no case that does not heal.
Have the patient stand upright. Take a thin rope and press it tightly under the feet. (Males use the left foot, females use the right foot.) Align the front end of the rope with the tip of the big toe, and the rear end with the back of the heel. Then pull it upward to the middle of the popliteal crease, and cut the rope. Have the patient untie their hair, parting it to both sides to reveal the hairline division, while sitting upright. Take one end of the previously cut rope, align it with the tip of the nose, pull it upward over the head, and guide it down along the spine until the end of the rope. Mark this point. Take another short piece of rope, align one end with the corner of the lips when the mouth is closed, and the other end with the bottom of the nose, then cut it. Fold this short rope in half at the previously marked spinal point, spreading it horizontally to both sides, and mark both ends so they align horizontally with the initial central mark. The two ends of this small rope are the moxibustion sites; the initial spinal mark is not a site but serves as a measuring reference. Wipe away the marks.
Another method:
Have the patient sit upright, slightly shrugging the shoulders. Take a rope around the neck, letting it hang down in double strands forward, aligning with the Jiwei acupoint (the xiphoid process, located below the throat bone), and cut it. Let the two ends of the rope hang down in double strands along the spine to the end, marking the point. Take another small rope, have the patient close their mouth across the corners, cut it, and return to the marked spinal point, dividing it horizontally as before. The ends of the small rope are the moxibustion sites; wipe away the long rope ends which are not sites. In total, these four points are treated with moxibustion daily. Each point receives between 7 and 14 moxa cones (zhuang). The total for the four points must reach 20 zhuang. If ineffective, increase to 100 zhuang, then stop. Wait until the sores are nearly healed, then measure again from the mouth corners with the small rope, hanging it down in double strands at the current point, marking along the spine up and down as before. Mugwort collected on the third day of the third lunar month is best. For 100 days after recovery, avoid miscellaneous foods. About a month after moxibustion, if the patient has not fully recovered, repeat the moxibustion exactly as before, ensuring permanent cure. (From Volume 7)
Zhang Wenzhong said that Wang Yuanli of Jingzhou once had his entire household die from Bone Steaming Chuan Shi (infectious tuberculosis transmitted from corpse to living person). A Daoist priest suddenly taught him moxibustion, which stopped the disease, and he taught others, resulting in universal cures.
Loss of appetite, tightness in the pulses along both sides of the spine. Patients often cough and sweat at night. Pressing and kneading the muscles on both sides of the spine (Jilu), sometimes feeling chest fullness and urgency. Yellowish emaciation, exhaustion of muscle in the spine, leading to bedridden state. If already bedridden with spontaneous movement in the chest and exhaustion of muscles on both sides of the spine, moxibustion is difficult. If chest muscle moves during moxibustion, it is not the correct technique. If diagnosing this disease in a child, do not need to select specific days like Li Ri; prepare mugwort in advance. Perform moxibustion at noon on the "Wang Dao Tou Ri" (auspicious day). Moxa 7 zhuang. If the disease is known to be mild, choose Li Ri at noon for great auspiciousness. For moxibustion, cover the child face down on the ground. Use the protruding rib head, hold with the child's thumb, extend the middle finger straight toward the spine, marking where the fingertip touches the less muscular area above the ribs. From this mark, go upward to the tip below the ear, which is the center. Bend the rope upward from the initial mark, noting where it reaches on the spine. Bend the rope again upward from the original mark, advancing to the previous mark. Measure with a stick using the length of two joints of the child's middle finger, going downward from the original mark along the spine. Mark four points on one side, eight in total on both sides, each about the size of a jujube pit. After recovery, resume normal activities. If relapse occurs due to violations before full recovery, further treatment is contraindicated.
Master Shen Su's method for moxibustion treating Bone Steaming and cough:
Measure horizontally from the ear canal on the head, approximately three cun apart, indicating an acupoint. Moxa 3 zhuang daily. By the eighth day, complete 14 zhuang. Above the third vertebra, second vertebra... (Text appears fragmented here) After another five days, moxa 15 zhuang daily. For the lower leg, measure from the transverse crease of the shoelace binding to the midpoint below the knee/iliac region (Ya qie), outside the tibia. Moxa 7 zhuang daily. By the eighth day, continue daily until reaching 35 zhuang total. For the upper arm, males use the left, females the right. Take the index finger from the wrist crease to the fingertip, moxa directly. Moxa 7 zhuang daily. By the eighth day, reach 100 zhuang total. For women with abdominal distension and amenorrhea, take the right index finger, measure from the navel to the lower abdomen, moxa at the fingertip position. Moxa 7 zhuang daily. Reach 300 zhuang total. Moxa the diaphragm area in the afternoon, and the lower diaphragm area in the morning. (From Volume 1)
