Jiyan Fang (Collected Proven Prescriptions) treats carbuncles and swellings: pain upon deep pressure indicates a deep-seated disease; pain upon slight pressure indicates a superficial disease; indentation that does not rebound after pressing indicates no pus. Indentation that rebounds immediately after pressing indicates the presence of pus. After the pus is completely drained, take ash from white reeds (Bai Di), leach it with water to obtain the juice, and decoct it until it becomes like paste. This medicine should not be prepared in advance; if prepared, it loses efficacy after ten days. It can also remove black nevi (Heizi). The medicine applied to the nevus should be wiped off immediately; otherwise, it will damage the skin. Another method using mulberry bark ash is also excellent.
Whenever incising areas where flesh is thickened due to various conditions, one must first widely seal the four sides. Otherwise, if the sore cracks open and Qi leaks out, death will ensue, which is incurable. (The above views are consistent with Fan Wang.)
For chronic carbuncles leaving behind bluish-black discoloration, use Wen Chilong (Warm Red Dragon, a specific treatment). Take pig manure, burn it to ash, sieve it through fine silk, and apply the powder into ulcers and necrotic sores until full. When fluid exudes and detaches, apply the powder again. Continue application until recovery. If greenish necrotic tissue regrows, apply Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix) and Ru (such as Huang Qin/Coptidis Rhizoma or similar heat-clearing herbs) lightly as before. (From Volume 8)
Qianjin Yi Fang (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions for Value of a Thousand Gold): If illness onset occurs on Wu Zi days (Rat days) at midnight, Wu Chou days (Ox days) at cockcrow, Wu Yin days (Tiger days) at dawn; Wu Mao days (Rabbit days) at sunrise, Wu Chen days (Dragon days) at mealtime, Wu Si days (Snake days) at late morning; Wu Wu days (Horse days) at noon, Wu Wei days (Goat days) at afternoon sun decline, Wu Shen days (Monkey days) at late afternoon; Wu You days (Rooster days) at sunset, Wu Xu days (Dog days) at twilight, Wu Hai days (Pig days) at nightfall. Illnesses occurring on these days and hours are generally fatal. (From Volume 23)
Guangji Fang (Broad Relief Formulas) treats carbuncles and swellings that have ulcerated: internal medication is taken, and external application of plasters is suitable. Song Zhi (Pinus Resin, 1 jin refined), Zhi (likely animal fat or resin, 3 he raw), Jiao Ye (Pepper Leaves, 1 liang), Bai La (White Beeswax, 3 liang), She Xian (Ophiopogon Japonicus Root, 1 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome, 1 liang), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, 1 liang). The above eleven ingredients are cut, and Zhi and La are first decocted in water until fully melted. Add all other herbs, boil three times up and down. When Bai Zhi turns yellow, the plaster is ready. Cut old cloth with scissors, apply the plaster according to the size of the sore, and change once day and night. For treating carbuncles where pus has ulcerated and purple hard flesh remains unresolved, use this powder mixed with head material to cauterize. Shi Liu Huang (Sulfur, 1 fen ground), Ma Chi Fan Shi (Alumen Rubrum calcined until juice is gone, 2 fen), Qi Tou (Lac Head, likely a typo or specific term), Ru (Ru Suan/Coptidis Rhizoma or similar, 2 fen), She Xiang (Musk, 2 fen ground), Xiong Huang (Realgar, 2 fen), Ci Huang (Orpiment, 1 fen ground), Bai Fan (Alumen, 2 fen calcined until juice is gone), Dan Sha (Cinnabar, 2 fen ground). The above eight ingredients are pounded and sieved into powder, stirred well, applied into the sore, and covered with plaster on the necrotic tissue. Change twice daily. (Consistent with Qianjin Fang, Qianjin Yi Fang, and Shen Shi Fang, all from Volume 30)

Huang Qi (1.5 liang), Huang Qin (1 liang), Xiong (1 liang), Huang Lian, Bai Zhi, Shao Yao (each 2 liang), Dang Gui (1.5 liang). The above seven ingredients are pounded and sieved, mixed with egg white to form a paste. Apply to sudden swelling sites via cloth. Replace when dry. Cured when cold sensation disappears. For severe heat and toxicity, add 1 liang of Bai Lian for better effect.
Another formula for carbuncles: Huang Qi Plaster. Huang Qi, Da Huang, Bai Zhi, Mu Li (Ostrea Shell, calcined), Bai Lian. The above five ingredients in equal parts are pounded and sieved, mixed with egg for application. Replace when dry.
Four-Ingredient Huang Lian Thin Plaster for Ulcerated Carbuncles. Huang Lian, Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Bai Zhi (each 1 liang). Pounded and sieved, mixed with egg white, spread on cloth, and applied to the carbuncle. Pierce the cloth at the sore opening to vent toxic qi and promote drainage.
One-Ingredient Gua Lou Thin Plaster for Carbuncles. Take appropriate amount of Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix), cut into five slices. Only this single ingredient. Simmer in vinegar until dry, pound and sieve. Mix with vinegar, spread on paper, and apply to carbuncles. Suitable for those taking oral powders. (All from Volume 9)
Qianjin Fang for Carbuncles: Song Zhi Plaster. Dang Gui, Huang Qi, Huang Lian, Shao Yao, La (Beeswax), Huang Qin, Xiong, Da Huang (each 1 liang finely cut), Song Zhi (Pinus Resin, 1.5 jin), Zhi (Animal Fat/Resin, 1.5 he). The above single ingredient is pounded and sieved, mixed with sesame oil to form mud, fried until dark black, spread on old cloth, and cut to match tumor size. Leave space at the top of the paper. If Ji Li Zi is unavailable, use adzuki beans and eggs as before. Replace when dry; very effective.
Jian Tang Decoction. Da Huang, Huang Qin, Bai Lian (each 3 liang), Mang Xiao (Mirabilite, 6 fen). The above four ingredients are decocted in 6 sheng of water to yield 3 sheng. Soak four layers of old cloth in the liquid, apply to the swelling, keep warm, and replace. Day and night. (Consistent with Qianjin Yi Fang)
Formula for Painful, Restless Carbuncles and Swellings. Apply ten layers of fresh Qiuye (Firmiana Leaf), wrap with cloth and cotton, adjust tightness appropriately, change twice daily. Relieves pain, reduces swelling, digests pus and blood. Superior to other plasters. In winter, use pre-stored dried leaves, moisten with salt water before use. Alternatively, use thin slices of Qiupie (Firmiana Bark). (Consistent with Beiji Zhangwen Zhong and Zhouhou)
Formula for Firm, Hard Carbuncles Unresponsive to Other Medicines. Slice Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) like chess pieces, thickness of one finger. Place directly on the swelling. Moisten Fu Zi with saliva, roast over fire until heat penetrates. When Fu Zi dries, re-moisten with saliva. Constantly allow heat to enter the swelling. All cases heal. This method is exquisite. (All from Volume 23)
Qianjin Yi Fang Huang Qi Tang: Mainly for carbuncles, excessive heat, dry mouth, clears heat and stops thirst. Formula for Swellings Whether Ulcerated or Not. Take one piece of glue, soak in water until soft. Weigh naturally to match swelling size, apply, leaving an opening at the top. If ulcerated and closed, pus is trapped by glue; urgently open to drain all pus. If no pus, swelling will subside spontaneously.
Another Prescription. Burn carp to ash, mix with vinegar, apply to all swellings until healed. Very good.
Wen Zhong Tang (Warm Middle Decoction): Mainly for carbuncles caused by excessive cold intake, cold invading middle jiao causing diarrhea with undigested food.
