The *Qianjin Fang* records a hard, stone-like nodule that is large in size and unchanged in color, sometimes referred to as *Shiyong* (Stone Carbuncle). The treatment for this condition uses the Lianshi San (Refined Stone Powder) formula.
Deer Antler (8 liang, alternatively white ash) Bai Lian (Bai Lian, White Peony Root; 3 liang) Coarse-textured Yellow Stone (1 jin, with 5 sheng of vinegar: first heat the stone until red hot, immerse it in vinegar, then reheat, repeating this process until half of the vinegar is consumed, then stop.)
Crush and sieve the above three ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with the remaining vinegar to form a paste. Apply thickly to the affected area. Reapply when dry. Continue until healed. Prepare more medicine as needed. This formula treats all types of fistulas and scrofula (*Luoli*). It must be applied over the wound created by fire-needle therapy.
Another prescription:
Grind Deer Antler alone into powder and mix with Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) juice for application. This is not as effective as the above formula. (Consistent with *Jiyan*, *Wenzhong*, *Duanju*, and *Gujin Luyuan*.)
Another prescription for treating *Shiyong* (Stone Carbuncle), which is hard as stone and does not suppurate:
Mash fresh Shang Lu Gen (Phytolaccae Radix, Pokeweed Root) thoroughly and apply as a compress. Replace when dry. This also treats nasal discharge (*Naolou*) and various carbuncles and furuncles. (Consistent with *Gujin Luyuan*.)
Another prescription:
Dry the inner bark of Shu Sang Gen (Mori Cortex, Mulberry Root Bark) in the shade, grind into powder, add E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), and mix with wine for topical application. This will extract the pathogenic factor. (All from Volume 23.)
Beiji Liaofa (Emergency Treatment Method) for treating swelling that is hard and has a root, named *Shiyong* (Stone Carbuncle):
Moxibustion on the swollen area for 300 moxa cones. Stone-like fragments should be expelled. If not expelled, increase the number of cones until expulsion occurs. For carbuncles, ulcers, *Shiyong*, tendon knots, and scrofula, acupuncture at the corners is contraindicated; acupuncture at the corners can cause death. (Consistent with *Jiyan*, *Wenzhong*, and *Qianjin*; from Volume 4.)
Liu Juanzi's prescription for treating carbuncles, furuncles, and various swellings with heat:
Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, Rehmannia Root; 3 jin, washed and finely sliced.)
Take the single ingredient, boil in 1 dou of water to obtain 3 sheng. Remove the dregs and simmer the decoction until slightly concentrated. Apply to paper and stick it to the center of the sore. Change multiple times a day. Frequent use is highly effective. It also treats swelling on the jaw of cattle. (From Volume 10.)
*Jiyan*'s prescription for treating carbuncles and furuncles that are firm, red, and hot:
Grind Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) with water and apply. Reapply when dry. Liquid secretion indicates resolution. Fresh Ban Xia dug from the field is best. This treatment is miraculous; do not doubt it. (From Volume 8.)
*Qianjin Fang*'s prescription for treating furuncles without heads:
Swallow one Kui Zi (Abutilon Seed, Indian Mallow Seed). Do not take excessively if there are many heads.
Another prescription:
Apply ash from burned Ge Man (Kudzu Vine) to seal the area for spontaneous resolution.
Another prescription:
Applying cow dung is beneficial.
Another prescription:
Apply Niu Zhan Ye (Arctii Folium, Burdock Leaf).
Another prescription:
Mix Que Fen (Sparrow Excrement) with water for application.
Another prescription:
Gou Tou Gu (Dog Skull Bone) Yun Tai Zi (Brassicae Napus Semen, Rapeseed Seed).
Grind the above two ingredients into equal parts powder. Mix with vinegar for sealing application.
Another prescription for continuous pus discharge after carbuncles and furuncles ulcerate, or wounds from puncture injuries that do not heal:
Take Shi Liu Huang (Realgar, specifically native sulfur here often refers to native sulfur or realgar depending on context, but literally "Stone Sulfur"; 3 liang) and powder it. Take one piece of Jin (Tendon/Fascia - note: character questionable), crush it, moisten slightly, place it in the Shi Liu Huang, and insert it into the wound hole. Stop when the wound heals.
There is also Gan Di Huang Wan (Dried Rehmannia Pill), which treats deficiency-heat causing carbuncles and furuncles.
Gan Di Huang (Dried Rehmannia Root; 4 liang) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Rhubarb; 6 liang) Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, Cinnamon Twig Heart; 2 liang) Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, Peony Root; 3 liang) Fu Ling (Poria; 3 liang) Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccariae Semen, Vaccaria Seed; 2 liang)
(2 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted; 2 liang) Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, Bitter Orange; 2 liang, roasted).
Grind and sieve the above thirteen ingredients. Form pills with honey, sized like wu zi (wuze tree seeds). Take ten pills with wine, three times daily. Increase to twenty pills. Long-term use promotes robustness and health. (Consistent with *Yi*.)
There is also Di Huang Jian (Rehmannia Decoction Paste), which tonifies deficiency and clears heat. It can be taken mixed with other substances to promote bowel movement. It dissipates *Shiyong*, ulcers, furuncles, and hemorrhoids. It is suitable for all heat conditions. Carbuncles and ulcers will never recur within one hundred days.
Take fresh Di Huang (Fresh Rehmannia Root) in any amount. Pound and press three times to extract all the juice. Strain the juice through new cloth multiple times. Clarify the juice and place it in a copper vessel. Boil over a water bath until reduced to the size of a bullet.
There is also Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction), which treats simultaneous exterior and interior heat, emptiness in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), sores on the body, or outbreaks of carbuncles and furuncles, accompanied by difficulty in urination and defecation.
Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, Mirabilite; 2 liang) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Rhubarb; 4 liang) Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, Gardenia Fruit; 14 pieces, split) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria Root; 2 liang) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Anemarrhena Rhizome; 2 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted; 2 liang).
Cut the above six ingredients. Boil in 5 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add Da Huang. Boil to obtain 1 sheng 8 he. Remove dregs. Add Mang Xiao. Divide into three doses. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum) and Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage). (All from Volume 13.)
*Qianjin Yi* states: All carbuncles and ulcers originate from the root of sores. After suffering from a carbuncle, if pus discharge does not stop and cold sets in, it becomes *Shu Lou* (Mouse Fistula/Sinus). Therefore, prescriptions for fistulas follow next, and urgent rescue is necessary.
Ma Chi Cao (Portulacae Herba, Purslane; 5 sheng, cut) Hu Bai Pi (Quercus variabilis Bark White Layer; 1 jin, boiled in 5 sheng water to obtain 1 sheng, clarified) She Xiang (Moschus, Musk; half an umbilical cord portion, dried and ground into powder) Xing Ren (Pruni Semen, Apricot Seed; 0.5 sheng, fried in oil until black, pounded into paste).
Store the above four ingredients in a porcelain vessel. Mix well. Seal the mouth tightly with three to four layers of cotton. For established sores, wash and dry with rice water. Cut into patches, apply the medicine to the patch, and stick it to the sore. Change three times a day. If no sore has formed, but scrofula nodes appear, use 1 sheng of Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, Mugwort Leaf), Huang Dan (Lead Oxide, size of a jujube), and Gan Qi (Dried Lacquer, size of a jujube). Grind these three into powder. Make moxa cones from mugwort and moxibustion for 21–30 cones. (This original formula treats Mouse Fistula; from Volume 23.)
Another prescription for treating furuncular swelling:
Powdered raw Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, Sichuan Pepper), Qu (Medicated Leaven), and Fu Yue Xia Tu (Earth from under the cauldron). Mix with strong vinegar for application. (All from Volume 24.)
