The etiology stems from the accumulation and stagnation of drinking water that fails to disperse. Subsequently, due to the conflict between food and drink, masses form in the hypochondrium. Symptoms may arise at dawn, presenting as distending pain, or panting and shortness of breath; hence it is termed "Pi Jie" (masses). A tight and solid pulse indicates Pi Jie. (From Volume 20)
*Guangji Fang* treats Pi Jie causing hardness and pain below the heart. Ba Dou Wan Formula:
Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, three seeds, remove heart and skin, stir-fry) Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, seven seeds, remove tips) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, size of a chicken egg)
Crush and sieve the Da Huang separately. Pound the Ba Dou and Xing Ren into a paste individually, mix with the Da Huang powder, and combine with honey to form pills. Take on an empty stomach with warm water, seven pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Administer once daily. Gradually increase the dosage until mild diarrhea expels the pathogen. Avoid raw, cold, and greasy foods. (From Volume 2)
*Qianjin Fang* Ye Lang Du Wan. Main formula for treating hard Pi Jie:
Ye Lang Du (Stellerae Radix, five liang, coat with ginger juice and roast) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, three liang, wash) Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, three liang) Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, four liang) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, two liang, processed) Xi Xin (Asari Radix, two liang) Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, three liang, sweat-treated)
Pound and sieve the seven ingredients. Separately pound the Xing Ren, mix with honey, and take with wine, two pills the size of soybeans. (From Volume 11)
*Jiuji Zhonghou* Hei Wan. A highly effective formula for treating various Pi Jie and phlegm-fluid retention:
Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, four fen) Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, four fen) Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, eight fen) Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flos, twelve fen, stir-fry) Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, five fen)
First, pound the first three medicines into powder. Separately pound the Ba Dou and Xing Ren into a paste and mix well. Pound another one thousand times, add honey, and pound two thousand more times. Form pills the size of broad beans. Take one pill with gruel to induce purgation; the dose can be increased to two or three pills. For infants ten days old prone to epilepsy, give one or two pills the size of millet grains. For any abdominal discomfort or feeling unwell, take immediately. Recovery occurs after one or two bowel movements.
(*Zhouhou Fang* and *Qianjin Fang* also use "Si Shen Jiu" which can purge and expel pathogens; From Volume 3)
The etiology states that Han Pi (Cold Mass) is caused by the accumulation of drinking water in the hypochondrium, resulting in hardness and pain. It is called Cold Mass because pain occurs upon exposure to cold. A string-like and large pulse indicates Cold Mass. (From Volume 20) *Zhouhou Fang* treats cold mass in the abdomen, accumulation of water and grain, retained phlegm below the heart, fullness in both hypochondria, rumbling upon pressure, and obstruction of diet:
Da Chan Chu (Bufo bufo gargarizans, one head, remove skin and internal organs, dissect) Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, one sheng for adults, seven he for medium build, five he for frail/small individuals)
Boil these two ingredients in seven sheng of water until four sheng remain. Take one sheng warm. If not purged, administer another sheng. For medium build, seven he; for frail/small, five he. Stop when purgation occurs. Repeat this preparation every nine or ten days thereafter.
Another formula:
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, three liang) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, two liang, roasted) Mi (Honey, one sheng two he) Zao (Jujubae Fructus, twenty-seven seeds)
Cut the four ingredients. Boil the first three in four sheng of water until two sheng one he remain. Remove dregs, add honey.
Reheat until honey melts. Divide into two doses. Avoid Algae (Haizao) and Brassica vegetables (Songcai).
Another formula:
Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, thirty seeds, boiled) Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, twenty seeds) Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, six fen) Li Lu (Veratri Radix, four fen, roasted) Zao Jia (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, three fen, remove skin)
Pound the five ingredients, mix with honey to form pills the size of broad beans. Take one pill before meals, three times daily. To purge pathogens, take two pills. Long-term administration for one hundred days leads to recovery. Avoid pork, reeds, and civet meat. (*Gujin Luyan* same; From Volume 3)
*Shenshi Fang* treats chronic cold mass. Symptoms include chest fullness, shortness of breath, hardness of heart and abdomen, vomiting, cold extremities, intermittent pain, aversion to food, worsening upon eating, cold heart, pulling stiffness of waist and back. Wu Zhu Yu Wan Formula:
Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, eight fen) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, three fen, processed) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, five fen, roasted) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, five fen, wash) Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, five fen) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, five fen) Fan Shi (Alumen, five fen, calcined) Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, five fen, roasted) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, five fen)
Sieve the nine ingredients, mix with honey. Take twenty pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds with wine, three times daily. Increase dosage if ineffective. (From Volume 16)
*Yannian Fang* Bai Zhu Wan. Treats chronic cold mass qi, fever caused by taking hot medicines, palpitations with fright, cold lower body and hot upper body, inability to eat or drink, frequent headache and vertigo, and tendency to vomit:

Pound and sieve the fifteen ingredients, mix with honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take fifteen pills with wine, twice daily. Can increase to twenty pills. (From Volume 16)
