Etiologically, the Lung governs the skin and hair, while the Kidney governs water metabolism. When Kidney deficiency occurs, water flows recklessly and overflows into the skin, causing swelling of the entire body and face. Upon pressing the swollen area, an indentation remains without sweat appearing; the abdomen remains normal in shape, without fullness or thirst; the limbs feel heavy but there is no aversion to wind. If the pulse is floating, this condition is named Pi Shui (Skin Water) [Edema affecting the skin]. (From Volume 20)
The Shen Shi formula treats Pi Shui (Skin Water), characterized by edematous qi within the skin and twitching movements in the four limbs, using the Mugufangji Tang (Cocculus Decoction).
Mugufangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (3 liang), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (3 liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) (3 liang), Fuling (Poria) (6 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (2 liang).
The above five herbs are cut, boiled in 6 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng of decoction, taken in two doses. Avoid consuming Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis), raw Cong (Allium fistulosum), and vinegar-preserved foods. (From Volume 19)
The Fan Wang formula treats Pi Shui (Skin Water) with swelling of the whole body and face, primarily using the Gancao Mahuang Tang (Licorice and Ephedra Decoction).
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (2 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed) (4 liang).
The above two herbs are boiled in 5 sheng of water; first boil Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) until it boils twice, skim off the foam on the surface, then add Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and boil to obtain 1 sheng of decoction. Strain out the dregs. When the temperature is suitable, take 1 sheng first. If sweating does not occur, repeat the dose. After walking approximately 2 zhang, sweating should occur. Do not take more after sweating; if no sweat occurs, continue taking it. Carefully protect against wind and cold; only go out after several days. Avoid Haizao (Sargassum) and Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis). (From Volume 28)
The Jin Gu Lu Yan formula treats Pi Shui (Skin Water), using Yuebi Tang (Yuebi Decoction) plus Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) as the main treatment.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed) (6 liang), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, broken) (12 pieces), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (4 liang), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced) (3 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (2 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (0.5 jin).
The above six herbs are crushed, boiled in 7 sheng of water; first boil Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) for one or two boils, skim off the foam, then add the remaining herbs and boil to obtain 2 sheng of decoction. Strain out the dregs. When the temperature is suitable, take 7 he per dose, three times a day. Dietary restrictions are the same as before. (The above three formulas from Fan Wang are originally from Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun [Treatise on Cold Damage]).
Etiologically, the Kidney belongs to Yin Qi, governs water metabolism, and also governs the waist and legs. Kidney deficiency leads to insufficient blood and qi in the waist and legs; water overflows and enters first through the deficient areas, so swelling begins in the feet. (From Volume 21)
The Zhouhou Beiji Fang: If swelling starts from the feet and progresses slightly upward, entering the abdomen will cause death. The treatment method is as follows.
Xiaodou (Vigna angularis) one hu, boiled until extremely soft, yielding 4-5 dou of juice. Soak the knees and below in the warm juice daily. After several days, the swelling will subside completely. If it has already entered the abdomen, do not soak; instead, boil Xiaodou (Vigna angularis) and eat it. Do not mix with rice, Gui fish, or salt. Drink exclusively Xiaodou (Vigna angularis) juice. If Xiaodou (Vigna angularis) is unavailable, Dadou (Sojae Semen Album) can be used.
Another formula: Peel Nanmu (Phoebe zhennan) and Tongmu (Vernicia fordii) wood, boil to obtain juice for soaking, and drink a small amount, following the method of Xiaodou (Vigna angularis). (From Volume 1)
Fan Wang formula treats Edema starting from the feet, which becomes fatal if it spreads upward into the abdomen, using Zhu Gan (Porcine Liver) formula.
One fresh pig liver, cooked according to dietary methods, finely chopped, and eaten all at once. Do not use salt; vinegar may be used. For pigs weighing 50-60 jin or more, consume the liver in one sitting. For pigs weighing over 100 jin, divide into two doses. (Same as Zhouhou Beiji Fang)
Another formula for swelling limited to both feet.
Chopped Congye (Allii Fistulosi Folium) boiled until soft, used for soaking, 3-4 times daily, yields good results. (Same as Jiyan Fang, From Volume 28)
