Discourse states: The emaciation of the elderly and children is due to a deficiency of harmonious Qi (vital energy). Cold Qi accumulates independently in the lower region (earth), while hot Qi dissipates independently in the upper region (heaven). Heaven and Earth do not interact, resulting in the formation of Pi syndrome (a condition characterized by fullness and obstruction) in the body. Once Pi syndrome forms, muscles lose moisture, and the interstices (pores and skin texture) become obstructed. This leads to urgent Qi sensation in the chest and diaphragm, and abdominal distension in the intestines and stomach. This occurs because Yin Qi attacks Yang Qi, preventing Yang Qi from connecting. Alternatively, there may be hard accumulation in the Bladder, causing heaviness in the legs, due to Yang Qi failing to descend and nourish, while Yin Qi dominates exclusively. This results in stagnation and obstruction in the large intestine, where decoctions cannot pass down, or food and water fail to digest. Additionally, shortness of breath worsens. If Guan Ge syndrome (a critical condition involving vomiting and constipation) is not unblocked, death is indeed inevitable.
This formula treats severe weakness and frailty in the elderly, where the constitution lacks heat, but excessive cold arises after taking Stone Powder (Shisan). The medicinal power lodges in the chest and diaphragm, causing disharmony between cold and heat, restlessness, shortness of breath approaching death. Since the medicinal power fails to circulate and defecation is impossible, causing harm to the person, it is urgent to induce vomiting.
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, four liang, raw):
Cut this single herb, boil in five sheng of water until reduced by half, remove the dregs, and take in one dose. Profuse vomiting should occur, and the medicine will exit along with the pathogenic factor, leading to recovery. For those suffering from heart and abdominal pain due to Stone Powder, who have failed to improve with various medicines, taking this Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) will clear obstructions in the diaphragm and facilitate bowel movements; it is highly effective.
Another formula for treating extreme weakness, clearing heat, and boosting Qi strength:
Zhuye (Leaf of Bambusa, cut, one sheng); Dazao (Fruit of Ziziphus Jujubae, twenty pieces, split); Huangqi (Radix Astragali, four liang); Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, three liang); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried); Renshen (Radix Ginseng); Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata).
Cut the above twelve herbs. Boil Zhuye in fifteen sheng of water to obtain ten sheng. Remove Zhuye, add the remaining herbs, and decoct to obtain three sheng. Take warm in divided doses. Observe usual dietary restrictions.
Another formula, Shenli Tang (Kidney Liquefaction Decoction), suitable for post-Stone Powder symptoms including deficient heat, emaciation, fatigue, leg pain, and lower back pain, particularly for those with prior Xu Lao (deficiency consumption) complicated by Wind pathogens:
Yangshen (Kidney of Ovis Aries, one piece, remove fat membrane and cut); Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, three liang); Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried); Xiongqiong (Radix Chuanxiong); Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae, remove core); Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba); Maidong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis, remove core); Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae, each one liang); Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata); Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, each four liang, cut); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae); Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, each one liang); Dazao (Fruit of Ziziphus Jujubae, twenty pieces, split).
Cut the above fourteen herbs. Boil Yangshen in ten sheng of water to obtain eight sheng. Add the other herbs and decoct to obtain three and a half sheng. Remove dregs and take in divided doses. Observe usual dietary restrictions.
Another formula for treating emaciation caused by internal heat, serving as a tonic:
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, two shi, finely cut and steamed thoroughly):
Moisten this single herb with one sheng of fine wine, dry in the sun, and pound into powder. Roll into pills by hand. Before meals, hold one pill (size of a walnut) in the mouth until completely swallowed. Take three to five times daily; this is excellent.
Another formula for treating yellowish, emaciated bodies unable to eat, and stiffness/pain in the waist and back after taking medicine, where one sinks into the bed when lying down and is too heavy to rise or walk. Suitable for use in Spring, Summer, and Autumn:
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, washed); Yichen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae, each four liang); Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens); Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae, each three liang); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae); Tugua Gen (Radix Trichosanthes Kirilowii); Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, each two liang); Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, one liang, soaked separately).
Cut the above eight herbs. Boil in eight sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Remove dregs and take warm in divided doses.
Qipo Tang (Bodhiraksha's Decoction), for treating Wind-Lao deficiency and damage, tonifying marrow to promote health:
Mayou (Semen Sesami Nigrum Oil, one sheng); Niusu (Butyrum Bovis, one jin); Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae, one handful); Humaren (Semen Sesami Nigrum, one sheng, ground); Chi (Folium Sojae Praeparatum, two sheng, soak in two sheng of water, extract juice); Mifengmi (Mel, one sheng); Shangjiu (Fine Wine, two sheng).
Place oil in a pot and boil. Add Congbai until yellow. Add Niusu, Mifengmi, Chi juice, and Humaren. When boiling, add Shangjiu. Prepare as a syrup and store in a non-porous container. Take one or two spoons daily, or mix with wine. If cold, add fresh Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, one jin, extract juice); dried Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Siccum) powder is also acceptable.
