Chapter: Twenty-two Formulas for Deafness
Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
Etiology: The Kidney is the zang organ associated with the Foot Shaoyin Meridian. Its essence and qi connect to the ears, which are the gathering point of the Zong Mai (major meridians). If the essence and qi are harmonious, the Kidney qi is strong, and hearing is normal; if there is deafness, it indicates disharmony. Regarding treatments using decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and bian stones, there are separate specific formulas. Methods for nourishing, supplementing, and guiding/exercising are attached below.
The "Health Preservation Method of Guiding and Pulling" states: Sit on the ground with legs crossed, insert both hands from between the bent knees, lower the head, and cross hands behind the neck. This treats chronic cold causing inability to self-warm and deafness.
Guangji Fang (Formulas from Guangji): Treatment for Deafness.
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, those one and a half cun long and plump) 7 pieces, Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen, peeled and fried until yellow) 7 pieces, Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, peeled and fried until yellow) 7 pieces, Yin Cheng Yan (Salt formed into cakes) 2 pieces, Fa Hui (Ash of Hair) half a qian bi (measure).
Crush and grind the above five ingredients finely enough to form pills. Make pills the size of Ruan He Ren (seed of Prunus mume). Wrap in thin hair and insert into the ear. Change once daily. Pain in the ear and discharge of fluid should occur; remove immediately after discharge.
Another formula for deafness where one cannot hear human speech:
Song Zhi (Pini Resina) 4 fen, Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, peeled, cored, fried) 2 fen, Ma Zi Ren (Cannabis Fructus) 2 fen, La (Animal Fat/Wax) 2 fen, Xun Lu Xiang (Boswelliae Carterii Resina/Ruyi Incense) 1 fen, Shi Yan (Rock Salt) 2 fen.
Grind the above six ingredients into a paste. Form pills the size of a jujube pit. Insert into the ear. Change every three days until cured.
Jiyan Fang (Verified Formulas): Treatment for Deafness.
Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen, peeled and cored, fried), Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Semen/Falcariae Semen, fried), Yan Mo (Salt Powder) in equal parts.
Grind the above three ingredients. Mix with a small amount of Zhu Zhi (Porcine Fat) and heat. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear.
Another formula:
Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed), Gua Zi (Melon Seeds), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen, peeled and fried) in equal parts.
Grind the above three ingredients. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear.
Qianjin Fang (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold): Treatment for Deafness.
Simmer Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) in Chun Cu (Pure Vinegar) over low heat for five to six nights. Shape into a form that can be inserted into the ear. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear until cured.
Another formula:
Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, 14 pieces, peeled, cored, fried), Lian Cheng Song Zhi (Refined Pini Resina) 2 fen.
Combine and grind the above two ingredients. Form pills the size of millet seeds. Use a hairpin tip to insert into the ear until cured.
Another formula:
Fill a bamboo tube with Li Yu Nao (Carassius Auratus Brain). Steam until melted. Drip into the ear.
Another formula:
Xiong Huang (Realgar) and Liu Huang (Sulfur) in equal parts. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear. Hearing may return after several months.
Another formula:
Heat iron until red-hot. Quench in wine and drink. Simultaneously plug the ear with Ci Shi (Magnetitum/Lodestone) until cured.
Another formula:
Bi Ma Zi (Ricini Fructus/Castoris Seed, 100 pieces, peeled), Da Zao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 19 pieces, peeled and pitted).
Grind the above two ingredients. Form pills the size of apricot kernels. Insert into the ear. Cured in twenty days.
Another formula:
Grind Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen/Mustard Seed). Mix with Nan Ru (Male Human Milk). Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear until cured.
Another formula:
Make a mud cake, thickness similar to 'KT Bao' (a type of bread/thickness measure). Cover the area around the ear tightly without leaking air. Pierce a small hole directly over the ear canal for ventilation.
Another formula:
Cut a bamboo stalk (arrow shaft diameter) 2 cun long. Insert into the ear. Seal the four sides with flour paste to prevent air leakage. Apply seven moxa cones (Zhuang) on the bamboo until cured. (From Volume 6)
Cui Shi Formula for Deafness. (Zheng Shaoqing says it is frequently used.)
Bo Lv Gao (One clam shell volume; if unavailable, use Da Ma Zhi/Hemp Oil reduced to one clam shell volume in a small vessel), Feng Mu Zhi (Maple Tree Resin) 0.5 liang (if unavailable, use Xun Lu Xiang/Ruyi Incense; Ru Tou Xiang/Boswellia Sacra is better), Song Zhi (Pini Resina) 0.5 liang (ground), Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, 3-7 pieces, peeled, fried, ground), La (Beeswax) size of a bullet (if Bo Lv Gao is unavailable, Hu Tong Lei/Poplar Tears can substitute for pill consistency).
First, pound Song Zhi and Ba Dao together 1,000 times. Then add Da Ma You/Hemp Oil and cook thoroughly. Form pills the size of a jujube pit, pointed at one end, with a hole through the center. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear. Change every few days. Plug ears alternately until cured. Do not plug both ears simultaneously. (From Volume 4)
Beiji Fang (Emergency Prescriptions): Chang Pu Gen Wan Formula for Deafness.
Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) 1 cun, Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) 1 piece (peeled, cored).
Combine and grind the above two ingredients to form pills. Divide into seven pills. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear. Replace one pill daily until cured. (Same as Zhouhou Fang)
Another Chang Pu San Formula:
Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) 2 liang, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed) 2 liang.
Grind and sieve the above two ingredients. Mix with Ku Jiu (Vinegar) to form pills the size of a jujube pit. Wrap in cotton. Insert into the ear while lying down. Change nightly. After ten days, yellow fluid will discharge, indicating cure. (From Zhouhou Fang, Qianjin Fang, Cui Shi Fang)
Another formula:
Ci Shi (Magnetitum/Lodestone), Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Xun Lu Xiang (Boswelliae Carterii Resina), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen, peeled, fried), Bi Ma Zi (Ricini Fructus, peeled), Song Zhi (Pini Resina) in equal parts.
Grind and sieve the above seven ingredients. Mix with wax and E Zhi (Anseris Adipatum/Goose Fat) to form slightly elongated pills. Pierce a hole through the center with a hairpin tip. First clean ear wax, then insert medication. Apply twice daily. Initially, itching and sounds may occur; cure within a month. (Dianzhong Houjian states this is very effective; same as Zhouhou Fang)
Jiuj Fang (Emergency Prescriptions): Treatment for Deafness.
Zhen Kunlun Qing Mu Xiang (True Kunlun Blue Agarwood) 1 liang, crushed. Soak in Ku Jiu (Vinegar) overnight. Add Hu Ma You (Sesamum Oleum/Sesame Oil) 1 he. Slowly simmer over low heat, performing "three ups and three downs" (boil, remove from heat, cool, repeat three times). Filter residue through cotton. Drip into the ear canal until cured.
Bixiao Fang (Effective Prescriptions): Treatment for Deafness.
Use high-quality Shen Ming Gao (Divine Bright Ointment), size of a jujube pit. Insert into the ear once daily. Frequent application leads to cure. After 3-5 days, pick out ear debris with a comb. Itching indicates improvement. Also treats insects entering the ear.
Another formula:
Take Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen, 7 pieces, peeled, crushed). Divide into three portions. Wrap each in cotton. Place a salt grain (size of a small bean) inside each wrap. Place in a vessel and steam in a rice steamer.
Another formula:
Ji Shi Bai (White Excrement of Chicken) 0.5 sheng (fried until yellow), Wu Dou (Black Soybean) 1 sheng (fried until popping stops).
Pour 2 sheng of Wui Hui Jiu (Clear Wine) over the above two ingredients while hot. Let stand for a long time. Filter residue. Drink warm in divided doses. Induce sweating. The ears may feel like drums; do not be alarmed.
Another Divine Effective Formula for Deafness:
Take fresh wet dung from a pure black sheep. Mix with Xing Zi Zhi (Apricot Kernel Oil) and Shi Yan Mo (Salt Powder).
Grind the above three ingredients. Pack tightly into the ear canal. Prevent wind entry. Replace when dry. Continue for up to 7 or 14 days. Sounds in the ear will gradually increase. Insert a KT Tong (tube) 2 cun long into the ear canal. Seal edges with flour. Do not let air escape. Wrap the tube head with a thin flour pancake. Moxibustion is applied to the top... (Text ends abruptly)
