*Qianjin Fang* states: If the pulse at the Cun Kou (Cun Kou, the radial artery pulse position) is rapid (Shu, rapid), and the patient suffers from coughing with turbid saliva and froth coming out of the mouth, what is the reason? The Master said, this is a disease of Lung萎 (Fei Wei, Lung Flaccidity). How does one contract Lung Flaccidity? The Master said, heat in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), caused by coughing, leads to Lung Flaccidity. It may also result from excessive sweating, vomiting, or Xiao Ke (Xiao Ke, Wasting-Thirst syndrome characterized by polydipsia, polyphagia, and polyuria) causing frequent urination. Or, due to constipation treated with harsh purgatives, leading to severe depletion of Body Fluids (Jin Ye, fluids in the body), thus contracting Lung Flaccidity. Furthermore, if the pulse at Cun Kou is faint or absent, yet sweating is induced, the Yang pulse becomes depleted early, while the Yin pulse is not choppy. The San Jiao (Triple Burner) moves sluggishly; Qi enters but does not exit. The body feels cold, yet internally there is vexation. There is excessive salivation, dry lips, and difficulty urinating. This is Lung Flaccidity, where Jin Ye are damaged. The expectorated phlegm resembles rotten melon or pig brain. This is solely due to improper sweating therapy. The patient desires to cough but cannot; when coughing, only dry froth is produced. Over time, urination becomes difficult. In severe cases, the pulse is floating and weak. In Lung Flaccidity, if there is expectoration of froth without coughing, the patient is not thirsty, inevitably suffers from enuresis (bedwetting/involuntary urination), and has frequent urination. The reason for this is that deficiency in the Upper Jiao fails to control the Lower Jiao. This belongs to Cold in the Lungs, inevitably accompanied by dizziness. The Master said, in Lung Flaccidity with coughing and expectoration, if the throat is dry and the patient desires water, they will recover spontaneously; if they breathe with an open mouth, it indicates Shortness of Breath (Duan Qi). (From Volume 17)
Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* treats Lung Flaccidity with expectoration of froth/saliva but no coughing, where the patient is not thirsty, inevitably suffers from enuresis, and has frequent urination. The reason is that Upper Jiao deficiency fails to control the Lower Jiao. This is Cold in the Lungs, inevitably accompanied by dizziness. It is primarily treated with Gancao Ganjiang Tang (Licorice and Dried Ginger Decoction) to warm the Zang organs.
Gancao (Licorice Root, 4 liang, processed with honey/hot) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 2 liang)
The above two ingredients are sliced. Add 3 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 1.5 sheng. Divide into two warm doses. After taking the decoction, cover slightly to keep warm. If thirst occurs, it indicates Xiao Ke. Avoid Haizao (Sargassum) and Songcai (Chinese Cabbage/Bok Choy).
Also treats Lung Flaccidity with excessive froth/saliva and a sensation of warmth and stickiness in the heart/chest. Formula: Zhigancao Tang (Processed Licorice Decoction).
Gancao (Licorice Root, 4 liang, processed) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 liang, peeled) Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 liang) Dihuang (Rehmannia Root, 1 jin) Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 3 liang, processed) Huomaren (Hemp Seed, 0.5 sheng) Dazao (Jujube, 40 pieces) Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 0.5 jin, core removed) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 2 liang)
The above nine ingredients are sliced. Mix with 7 sheng of fine wine and 8 sheng of water. First decoct the first eight ingredients to obtain 4 sheng. Strain to remove dregs. Add Ejiao and melt over low heat. Take 7 ge warm, three times daily and once at night. (All from Volume 8)
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* treats Lung Flaccidity with coughing, expectoration of froth, warmth in the chest, dry throat, and thirst. (Some say no thirst).
Shengtianmendong (Fresh Asparagus Tuber, crushed to yield 1 sheng of juice) Jiu (Wine, 1 sheng) Yitang (Malt Sugar, 1 jin) Ziwan (Aster Root, powdered, 4 he)
The above four ingredients are combined in a copper vessel and boiled over hot water until suitable for making pills. Take one pill the size of an apricot kernel, three times daily. Avoid Carp. (*Fan Wang Fang*, *Jingxin Lu* are identical; from Volume 1)
*Jiyan Fang* treats Lung Flaccidity with continuous expectoration of froth, dry throat, and thirst. (Some say no thirst).
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, processed) Dazao (Jujube, 12 pieces, split)
The above four ingredients are sliced. Add 5 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 1.5 sheng. Divide into two doses. Avoid Haizao and Songcai. (From Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun*, *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang*, etc.)
Also treats Lung Flaccidity with coughing, froth, warmth in the chest, dry throat, and thirst. (Some say no thirst).
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, processed) Dazao (Jujube, 12 pieces, split)
The above three ingredients are sliced. Add 5 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 1.5 sheng. Divide into two doses. One variation uses 3 liang of Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) instead of Shengjiang. Avoid Haizao and Songcai. (Identical to Wen Zhong, *Qianjin Fang*, *Gujin Luyan*; *Shenshi Fang* calls it Wenpi Tang; *Fan Wang Fang* is also identical).
Also treats Lung Flaccidity with alternating chills and fever, red cheeks, and急促 breathing (Qi Ji).
Collect urine from a healthy boy every evening. Discard the initial and final portions, retaining approximately 5 ge of the middle portion. Select high-quality Gancao (Licorice Root). Measure the length of the patient's middle finger joint (left for males, right for females), cut the licorice to that length, roast until thoroughly cooked, break into four pieces, and place in the urine. Leave uncovered in a clean place overnight. The next morning at dawn, remove the licorice. Take the entire dose at once, one dose per day. The boy should avoid Wu Xin (Five Pungent Spices: garlic, chives, leeks, scallions, and asafoetida). Avoid Haizao, Songcai, and hot noodles. (All from Volume 4)
*Shanfan Fang* treats deficiency-cold with wheezing, excessive drinking, and rebellious Qi with vomiting. Formula: Banxia Feiwei Tang (Pinellia Lung Flaccidity Decoction).
Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 sheng, washed with boiling water) Mujiang (Mother Ginger/Original Ginger, 1 jin) Jupi (Tangerine Peel, 1 jin) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 8 liang) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 4 liang)
The above five ingredients are sliced. Add 9 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 3 sheng. Strain and divide into three warm doses. Avoid mutton, malt sugar, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, and raw green onions. (One variation adds Sangbaipi [Mulberry Root Bark], sliced, 1 sheng).
Also treats all cases of deficiency-cold Lung Flaccidity with panting. Formula: Gan Dihuang Jian (Dry Rehmannia Decoction).
Gan Dihuang (Dry Rehmannia Root, 5 liang) Sanggen Baipi (Mulberry Root Bark, sliced, 2 sheng) Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, 5 liang) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) Renshen (Ginseng Root) (Each 3 liang) Huomaren (Hemp Seed, 1 sheng, stir-fried)
The above six ingredients are sliced. Add 9 sheng of water. First decoct the first five ingredients to obtain 3 sheng. Strain. Add Huomaren and boil briefly. Divide into three doses. Avoid raw green onions and Elaeagnus fruit (Wuyi). (All from Volume 2)
*Qianjin Fang* treats Lung Flaccidity with excessive froth/saliva and a sensation of warmth and stickiness in the chest. Formula: Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction).
Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, processed)
The above single ingredient is sliced. Add 3 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 1.5 sheng. Divide into three warm doses. Avoid Haizao and Songcai. (*Fan Wang Fang* is identical).
Also treats Lung Flaccidity with expectoration of froth. Formula: Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Zaojiao Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction minus Peony plus Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit).
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 3 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, processed) Da Zaojiao (Large Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, one pod, skin and seeds removed, roasted) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 liang) Dazao (Jujube, 12 pieces, split)
