Etiologically, the Kidney governs the lower back and legs. If the Kidney meridian is deficient and damaged, wind-cold pathogens take advantage of this deficiency to invade, thus causing lower back pain. Furthermore, if pathogenic factors lodge in the collaterals of the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) meridian, it causes lower back pain radiating to the hypochondrium/abdomen, making it impossible to lie on one's back and breathe freely. Upon diagnosis, a deep pulse at the Chi position indicates lower back pain; a weak pulse at the Cun-Kou position also indicates lower back pain; if both the Chi and Cun positions present a floating pulse that goes straight down, this indicates stiffness and pain in the lower back due to pathology of the Du Mai (Governing Vessel). Any pain resulting from lying on the ground for a long time: it is also said that after sweating, one should not sit on the edge of the bed with feet hanging down; doing so for a long time will lead to Blood Bi syndrome, characterized by heavy sensations in both feet and lower back pain. The Daoyin (Guiding and Pulling) method states: For those learning health preservation and regulation, first spread the toes outward to feel a sensation of stuffiness and pain, then gradually raise the body and sit as casually as possible with feet planted on the ground. Wait until the posture resembles internal sitting without pain, then begin to erect both knees pointing outward. Practice this sitting method regularly to eliminate cold wind in the Bladder organ, cold knees, foot pain, rebellious Qi, and lower back pain, which will naturally subside.
Fan Wang’s Formula for Lower Back Pain.
Use Bie Jia (Tartaric Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum - one piece, roasted until yellow, scraped clean).
Grind the above single ingredient into powder. Take one Fang Cun Bi (a traditional Chinese measure for powder) with warm water or wine on an empty stomach, three times a day. Avoid eating Amaranth (Xian Cai). (Duan Ju also treats lower back pain with this).
Bei Ji Liao Yao Tong Fang (Emergency Formula for Treating Lower Back Pain).
Use Shuo Luo Ye (Achyranthis Bidentatae Folium - leaves of Achyranthes bidentata), roast them over fire, and lay them thickly on the bed. Lie on them while hot; replace when they cool. In winter, collect the roots, crush them, and heat them up for use. This also treats Wind-Damp-Cold Bi syndrome, and lower back pain preventing movement in postpartum women suffering from cold injury, which is also very effective.
