Author: Wang Tao
Dynasty: Tang Dynasty, Tianbao 11th Year
Chapter: One Prescription for Lice Disease / One Prescription for Soft Mass of Turtle Shape
Category: Formulas
[Original Text]
Etiology: Some people have many lice. They have a habit of biting them. Since they bite so much, their internal organs become weak and cannot digest the ingested matter. Unfortunately, this changes and generates disease, though few suffer from it. Folklore says that those suffering from lice disease must bite lice when they see them, unable to stop themselves. The lice grow inside the abdomen. Occasionally, they emerge from the lower orifice, which can also be fatal. (From Volume 19)
Qianjin Formula for Treating Lice Disease: Caused by swallowing lice into the abdomen, where they grow and cause lice disease.
Old comb teeth (one piece), Old comb (one piece).
The above two ingredients are each broken into two parts. Take one part of each and burn it to ash, then powder it. Take the remaining one part of each and boil in five sheng of water until one sheng remains. Drink the previous powder with this decoction in one dose. Soon after, the disease will exit. No dietary restrictions apply. (Also found in Guangji, Volume 2)
Etiology of Soft Mass of Turtle Shape (Bie Xia): Refers to a soft mass forming in the abdomen resembling a turtle. It arises from eating turtle meat that was exposed to cold and not digested properly, or from consuming various cold foods that transform within the body. All cases are due to weak Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, which fails to overcome and digest cold factors upon encounter. "Xia" (soft mass) implies falsity, meaning its shape is false and movable. Once, a man and his slave both suffered from Bie Xia. The slave died first, so his abdomen was opened, revealing a white turtle that was still alive. Someone riding a white horse came to look at this turtle. The white horse suddenly urinated onto the turtle, causing it to retract its head and legs immediately. Then, horse urine was poured into it, and it turned into water. The owner said, "I will recover." He drank it and indeed recovered as predicted. Thus, health preservation texts say: In the sixth month, do not drink water from marshes, as it causes people to develop Bie Xia. (From Volume 19)
Cui's Formula for Treating Bie Xia:
Rhubarb Root (6 zhu), Dried Ginger (0.5 liang), Prepared Aconite Root (9 zhu, processed), Ginseng Root (9 zhu), Lateral Aconite Root (0.5 liang, processed), Cinnamon Twig Heart (6 zhu),
Fritillaria Bulb (0.5 liang), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (2 liang), Asarum Root (18 zhu), Ground Beetle (7 pieces, about 1 cun long, roasted).
The above ten ingredients are pounded and sifted. Take half a fangcun bi (a measuring spoon) with wine, three times a day. Avoid pork and cold water. (From Volume 9)
