According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), such illnesses arise from irregular seasonal climates and improper regulation of warmth and cold. When humans contract pathogenic qi that deviates from normal climatic patterns, they fall ill, and the pathogenic qi becomes contagious, potentially leading to the death of an entire household and spreading to outsiders. Therefore, it is necessary to take preventive medicine in advance and employ ritualistic methods for protection. (From Volume 10)
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats warm epidemics, specifically targeting warm diseases that are mutually contagious, potentially causing the death of an entire household and affecting outsiders, with no one escaping. The Red Bean Pill Formula:
*Adzuki Beans* (Chi Xiao Dou) (2 liang)
*Podophyllum Rhizome* (Gui Jiu) (2 liang)
*Celastrus Ramulus* (Gui Jian) (2 liang)
*Cinnabar* (Dan Sha) (2 liang, ground)
*Realgar* (Xiong Huang) (2 liang, ground)
Grind the above five herbs into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of adzuki beans. Take one pill; this allows one to share a bed or clothing with patients without contracting the disease. (From Volume 9)
*Yan Nian Mi Lu* (Secret Records of Longevity) targets dispelling warm epidemics and malignant qi, preventing mutual contagion. The Fermented Soybean Decoction Formula:
*Prepared Soybean* (Dou Chi) (1 sheng)
*Dragon's House Earth* (Fu Long Gan) (3 liang, ground)
*Infant Urine* (Xiao Er Xiao Bian) (3 sheng)
Decoct the above three ingredients using infant urine until reduced to 1.5 sheng, then filter out the dregs. Take on an empty stomach in the morning to prevent contraction of miasma epidemics. In areas prone to epidemic miasma, it is advisable to take this daily in the morning. (From Volume 10)
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states that latent heat accumulating in the Stomach causes chest fullness. Chest fullness leads to rebellious Qi, and rebellious Qi results in hiccups. Furthermore, if severe purgation has occurred, resulting in deficiency-cold in the Stomach, this too can cause hiccups. (All from Volume 10)
*Duan Ju Fang* (Short-Term Prescriptions): Mugwort Root Decoction, treating warm disease with fever where hiccups are induced by suddenly drinking cold water.
*Rhizoma Imperatae* (Mao Gen)
*Puerariae Radix* (Ge Gen) (each cut, 0.5 sheng)
Decoct the above two herbs in 4 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Drink when slightly warm. Stop administration once hiccups cease.
Another formula for treating warm disease where heat remains unremoved, followed by sudden cold exposure under heavy blankets, causing cold toxicity to enter the Stomach and heat to accumulate and stagnate, transforming into hiccups:
Decoct the bark of *Catalpa Tree* (Zi Pi) alone and drink slowly; this is preferable. If warm disease patients have accumulated cold drinks, causing cold to knot in the Stomach while heat sinks into the Kidney, resulting in severe high fever, administer *Catalpa Bark*; the hiccups will stop. If there is heat in the Kidneys, after recovery, the skin on the soles of the feet tends to peel, and hair falls out; these are the signs of this syndrome.
Another formula: Mugwort Root and Tangerina Peel Decoction, treating hiccups caused by Stomach cold transformation in spring-summer epidemics, cold damage, or warm disease.
*Rhizoma Imperatae* (Bai Mao Gen) (cut, 1 sheng)
*Tangerina Peel* (Ju Pi) (3 liang)
*Cinnamon Twig Heart* (Gui Xin) (2 liang)
*Puerariae Radix* (Ge Gen) (2 liang)
Cut the above four herbs, decoct in 6 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into three warm doses, taking 3 he per dose. Continue administering until finished, then re-decoct. Stop only when hiccups cease. If slight heat is present, reduce *Cinnamon Twig Heart* by 1 liang. (Same as recorded in Wen Zhong and *Gu Jin Lu Yan*, from Volume 6)
*Gu Jin Lu Yan*: Loquat Leaf Infusion, treating warm disease with fever where hiccups are induced by suddenly drinking cold water.
*Loquat Leaf* (Pi Pa Ye) (wipe off hairs)
*Rhizoma Imperatae* (Mao Gen) (each 0.5 sheng)
Cut the above two herbs, decoct in 4 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Drink slowly. Stop administration once hiccups cease. (From Volume 3)
