Aconitum carmichaelii (one piece) is finely pounded. Add three sheng of water and boil until two da sheng remain. Gradually rub this liquid on the area below the navel and the genitalia. The fetus should be expelled immediately.
Cow dung from a yellow cow, stir-fried with vinegar, is applied to the abdomen and secured tightly with cloth for expulsion. This formula is also known as Li Sheng Dan (Establishing Sage Pill), treating transverse or breech presentation and fetal death in utero.
Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite, two liang, raw) is ground into a fine powder together with another two liang of Chi Shi Zhi. Wu Sha (Cinnabar, five qian) is added and ground again until the mixture resembles the color of deep peach blossoms. Take three fen per dose, mix with thin rice gruel from a well to form a paste, apply onto paper cut into apricot-leaf size, and paste it on the center of the umbilicus. Replace when dry; no more than three times are needed for delivery.
Use the middle finger to dip soot from the bottom of a cooking pot and draw a "Jiao" (cross) character on the infant's sole for immediate normal delivery. Alternatively, apply a mixture of salt and flour to both soles of the infant for normal delivery. One may also apply salt to the infant's feet, scratch them with fingernails, and massage the mother's abdomen with salt for normal delivery. For cases where limbs present first, apply genuine Zao Xin Tu (Furnace Hearth Earth)...
During labor, if the small intestine prolapses first, do not spray vinegar on the woman's face, as fear may scatter the Shen (Spirit). Instead, insert the tip of the parturient's hair or a paper twist into the nostril to induce sneezing... Place the prolapsed intestine in a lacquerware vessel and soak it in warm decoction of Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) until it retracts. Additionally, remove the shell from Bi Ma Zi (Ricini Semen, forty-nine grains), pound into a paste, and apply to the vertex of the parturient's head. Once the intestine has fully retracted, wipe off the medicine immediately; do not delay. (This formula must only be used after the placenta has been expelled, but is less safe than the previous method). For postpartum intestinal prolapse, soaking in Cong Tang (Scallion Decoction) or Zhi Qiao Tang (Aurantii Fructus Decoction) is effective.
Light a Si Yan Deng (Four-Flame Lamp, meaning one lamp holder with four wicks) containing Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) in a cup to calm the spirit. For syncope during labor with loss of consciousness, make pills of Sheng Ban Xia (Raw Pinellia Rhizome) the size of beans and insert them into the nose. (Alternatively, grind into powder and insufflate into the nose; consciousness returns upon sneezing). For dizziness... Tie a six-chi rope around the upper part of the parturient's right knee. Have someone pull both ends sharply to restore consciousness, then slowly untie it.
Wash the lower part with strong decoction of Cong Bai (Scallion White); the placenta will be expelled. Alternatively, cover a well with the husband's single garment; the placenta will be expelled immediately. Or strike the main beam in the hall three times; the placenta will be expelled. Or insufflate Mo Jiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit) powder into the nostrils; the placenta will be expelled upon sneezing. Or boil Hei Dou (Black Soybean) for several boils, soak a cloth in the warm liquid to compress the umbilical and abdominal area, and apply thickly; the placenta will be expelled. Or use Bi Ma Zi (Ricini Semen, fourteen grains, shelled)... After expulsion, wash off the medicine quickly; prolonged contact may cause intestinal prolapse. If the intestine has already prolapsed, still apply this medicine to the fontanelle. Delay leads to retained placenta after fetal death, with upward rushing sensation to the heart. Urgently take Yi Die Tu (Ant Hill Soil, three sheng), heat it, place in a bag, and compress the chest. Effective. (Above are emergency formulas for labor)
