Chui Yong (Drooping Abscess). Within five to seven days after birth, infants may develop a lesion in the throat and on the tongue that resembles a reed husk filled with water, appearing like a hanging abscess. Wrap a long needle with cotton, leaving only a small amount of the sharp tip exposed, and puncture the lesion to drain greenish, reddish, or yellowish fluid. One puncture is sufficient. If the swelling does not subside, repeat the puncture the next day. After three punctures, it will naturally resolve. After puncturing, wash the area with salt water and apply Yizi San (One-Character Powder). For severe cases, administer Jin Zhu San (Gold and Cinnabar Powder). If the lesion occurs under the tongue, it is called Chong She (Double Tongue); if it occurs inside the cheeks or on the palate, it is referred to as Chong E (Double Palate/Gum); if it occurs at the gum line, it is called Chong Chi (Double Teeth). All these conditions are treated by puncturing and applying dressings as described above.
Yizi San treats Chui Yong, Chong She, Chong E, and Chong Chi.
Zhusha (Cinnabar), Pengsha (Borax) (each 5 fen); Puxiao (Mirabilite), Bingpian (Borneol) (each 1 zi).
Grind all ingredients into powder. Mix with a small amount of honey and brush onto the oral cavity.
Jin Zhu San treats fetal convulsions with high fever, latent heat from cold damage, deficiency heat in the upper jiao, as well as Chong She, red eyes, and sores in the mouth and nose.
Tianzhu Huang (Calamus Rhizoma), Mayaxiao (Saltpeter), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) (each 5 qian); Yujin (Curcuma Radix, boiled in water, 5 qian); Chantui (Cicada Slough, 14 pieces, washed clean of soil); Zhusha (Cinnabar, 5 fen); Shexiang (Musk, a little).
Grind all ingredients into powder. Take 3-5 fen each time, mixed with honey water for administration.
Tai Feng (Fetal Wind). The newborn's skin appears as if scalded by hot water or burned by fire. This is caused by the pregnant mother consuming overly rich and greasy foods. The mother should take Qingwei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) and Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to clear the pathogenic qi. Alternatively, the infant may drink a small amount. If accompanied by redness and heat, it is due to Stomach Fire; apply Gypsum Powder externally. If there is no redness or heat, it is due to Spleen Deficiency of the fetus and mother; apply Rice Flour externally. In older infants, this condition arises from internal steaming of visceral heat combined with external invasion of dampness, known as Yu Lan Chuang (Jade-Rotting Sores). Apply Jinhuang San (Golden Yellow Powder) mixed with honey water externally.
Xiaoyao San (see Luoli Section); Qingwei San (see Prenatal Ulcers Section).
Tai Chi (Fetal Redness). Within the first month after birth, the infant's skin suddenly turns red like cinnabar. This is caused by fetal heat. Clear the mother's heat internally. Externally, apply powder made from Indigo Leaf (Lanye). Refer to the section on Chi You Dan (Red Wandering Carbuncle) for reference.
Additionally, if an infant's eyes are not cleaned thoroughly during bathing, the eyelids may become red and ulcerated, persisting until adulthood. This is also called Tai Chi. Wash with Erjin San (Two-Gold Powder).
Erjin San treats fetal redness of the eyes.
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) (equal parts, coarsely powdered, soaked in milk overnight, then dried by baking).
Take a small amount, wrap in cotton, soak in Schizonepeta Decoction (Jingjie Tang), and wash frequently.
