Fengmei Ju (Phoenix Eyebrow Carbuncle) arises on the ridge of either eyebrow, with a shape long like a melon, presenting diffuse swelling and redness. It is caused by accumulated heat in the Bladder, Small Intestine, Liver, and Gallbladder channels. If accompanied by irritability, oppression, vomiting, and inability to eat, the prognosis is ominous.
[Note] This carbuncle is also known as Meifa Ju (Eyebrow Hair Carbuncle). It arises on the eyebrow ridge; regardless of whether it is on the left or right, it is caused by accumulated heat in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel, Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Channel, Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel, and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel. Its shape is long like a melon, pain radiates to the head, both eyes swell, the mass is hard and red, and pressing it reveals a deep root. If punctured within six days and pus is discharged, it is auspicious; if no pus appears, it is dangerous. In severe cases, if it does not ulcerate within fourteen days, and is accompanied by irritability, vomiting, and anorexia, the prognosis is ominous. Initially, Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Saving Lives Decoction) should be taken, followed by Tuoli Tou Nong Tang (Supporting Interior and Penetrating Pus Decoction). Rapid ulceration is desirable; delay may lead to erosion of the eye and damage to vision. For other internal and external treatments, refer to the section on Ulcerated Sores and Carbuncles.
Xinque Ju (Heart Center Carbuncle) arises at the Yintang point. Hard swelling indicates a carbuncle (Ju), while edematous swelling indicates a sore (Yang). It is caused by wind-heat invading the Governing Vessel, leading to stagnation of Qi. The root is hard, and numbness and pain suggest it should be guarded against as a Ding (Hard Carbuncle).
[Note] This condition arises between the two eyebrows; the carbuncle is named Yintang Ju (Yintang Carbuncle). At the onset, the toxin presents with dark color and flat root, with swollen, hard, and painful tissue. By the twenty-first day, if it腐rupts and discharges thick pus, it is a favorable course (Shun); if there is no pus and it sinks blackly, it is unfavorable (Ni). The sore is named Mian Feng Du (Facial Wind Toxin). At the onset of the sore toxin, the color is red and swollen, painful but easy to treat, and it ulcerates within seven days. If the color is black, numb and painful, with excessive itching and tingling, and the root is hard like an iron nail, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, it is Xinque Ding (Heart Center Hard Carbuncle). All these are formed by wind-heat congestion and Qi stagnation in the Governing Vessel channel. Both carbuncle and sore conditions should be treated according to the methods for Baihui Ju (Baihui Carbuncle); the treatment for Xinque Ding is the same as for general Ding.
Longquan Ju (Dragon Spring Carbuncle) arises at the Renzhong point. It presents with itching, hardness, pain, and a shape resembling a red bean. It is caused by upper Jiao wind-heat attacking the Governing Vessel. The symptoms of aversion to cold and high fever are treated similarly to Ding.
[Note] This condition arises at the Shuigou point, i.e., Renzhong (Governing Vessel 26), belonging to the Governing Vessel channel. Its shape resembles a red bean, the lesion is small but the root is deep, hard, numb, and painful, with purple color and a scorched apex. Chills and fever alternate, with intermittent itching. This is caused by upper Jiao wind-heat attacking the Governing Vessel. It should be treated urgently according to the methods in the Ding section; delay allows the toxin to attack inward, causing irritability, nausea, dry heaving, mental confusion, and stupor, with swelling of the cheeks and neck, often leading to untreatable outcomes.
