(To be treated for both men and women)
The condition of "Jiao Fa" (Foot Erysipelas/Cellulitis) belongs to the deficiency of essence and blood in the three Yin meridians of the foot, or the downward pouring of damp-heat in the three Yang meridians of the foot. If the affected area is red, swollen, painful, and suppurates, it belongs to the downward pouring of damp-heat. If accompanied by thirst and dribbling urination, it indicates the failure of Yin Qi without transforming into a malignant syndrome, which is incurable. The treatment method: For those with downward pouring of damp-heat, first apply Garlic-Separated Moxibustion (Ge Suan Jiu) and Huoming Yin (Decoction for Saving Lives) to resolve the stagnation and toxicity, then administer Yiqi Tang (Qi-Nourishing Decoction) and Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill), to tonify essence and Qi. If the affected area is dark purple and painless, apply Moxibustion Directly on Flesh (Zhuo Rou Jiu) and Mulberry Branch Moxibustion (Sang Zhi Jiu) to promote circulation of stagnation and assist Yang Qi, further using Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Ingredient Great Tonifying Decoction) and Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach and nourish the source of transformation; many recover. If one only treats the sore while neglecting the vital energy, damaging the life-generating force, I have never seen effective cases.
Grand Secretary Jin Jian'an had itching between his toes with edema. Applying anti-itch medicine on the dorsum of the foot was ineffective, and taking damp-draining agents worsened the symptoms. I considered this to be downward pouring of damp-heat due to Yin deficiency, and cured him with Liuhuang Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Six Pill) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Nourishing Decoction).
Censor-in-Chief Li Beixi had redness, swelling, and pain in the left foot, indicating downward pouring of damp-heat in the three Yang meridians of the foot. First, he received Garlic-Separated Moxibustion and one dose of Huoming Yin (Decoction for Saving Lives); the pain ceased immediately, and fluid exuded from the moxibusted area, causing the redness and swelling to vanish instantly. Subsequently, four doses of Tuoli Xiaodu San (Interior-Supporting Detoxifying Powder) were administered along with local moxibustion, leading to suppuration and recovery.
Confucian scholar Yang Juyuan suffered from this. With slight swelling, pain, and faint redness, it indicated downward pouring of damp-heat due to Yin deficiency in the three Yin meridians of the foot. He used Garlic-Separated Moxibustion and Tuoli San (Interior-Supporting Powder) to raise the lesion, Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Ingredient Great Tonifying Decoction) to form pus, and Jiabian Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill), taking 100 doses until the wound healed.
A Confucian scholar suffered from this, with hard swelling and white coloration for over two months. This was due to deficiency of the three Yin meridians of the foot invaded by external cold. He used Dafangfeng Tang (Great Wind-Expelling Decoction) and Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Ingredient Great Tonifying Decoction). Due to deficiency-cold of the Spleen Earth, the Fire of the Gate of Vitality could not generate support. He used Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) and Yiqi Tang (Qi-Nourishing Decoction), taking over 100 doses. Fortunately, being young and strong, he recovered.
A man had heat in the soles of his feet and thirst with desire to drink. Others used Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction) along with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), resulting in abdominal pain, vomiting, irritability, severe heat, and extreme thirst. This damaged the Spleen and Stomach. [The text implies switching to] Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), after which the Spleen and Stomach functioned healthily. Then, Jiabian Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill) was taken concurrently for half a year, leading to recovery.
A Confucian scholar had heat in the soles of his feet and itching. Soaking them in boiling water caused ulceration and weeping, leading to emaciation where muscles wasted away leaving bones visible, accompanied by thirst and expectoration of phlegm. This indicated deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney with water flooding and transforming into phlegm. He took Yiqi Tang (Qi-Nourishing Decoction) and Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill); after more than a year, his Yuan Qi (Original Qi) recovered and all symptoms subsided.
Vice Minister Gu Dongjiang had a sallow complexion and thirst. I said: This is deficiency of the Kidney Meridian; one should nourish the source of transformation to prevent future complications. Although he agreed verbally, he ultimately did not take the medicine. [Later], the sore dissipated after several days, but the color remained dark. At that time, the Duke was about to travel north to celebrate the Emperor's birthday. I diagnosed him and said: The Spleen pulse is weak and exhausted, and Yang Qi is extremely deficient; long-distance travel is inadvisable. The Duke said: My dreams have often come true; previously I dreamed of immortals waiting for me, which is a sign of longevity. Arriving at the Juxiantang Inn in Hejian Post Station, his illness became critical. He sighed: Could Lizhai really keep me alive? He indeed passed away there, which was also an unusual destiny.
