Although diseases are treated with medication, it is essential to observe dietary and lifestyle taboos. First, the patient's room must be kept clean by sweeping. In winter, the curtains should be kept warm; in summer, cool mosquito nets are appropriate, to prevent invasion by insects such as flies and centipedes. ... Beef, dog meat, fishy foods, preserved meats, cured bacon, and smoked or stored items can all induce thirst; raw or dried melons, fruits, pears, persimmons, water chestnuts, and dates can damage the stomach and spleen; chicken, goose, mutton, as well as shellfish like clams, cockles, pufferfish, shrimp, and crabs (seafood) can stir up internal wind and cause itching; greasy, fried, roasted, grilled, salty, or sour strong-flavored foods can most easily generate fire and phlegm; adzuki beans and buckwheat noodles can disturb qi and trigger disease; anger, irritability, and violent temperaments often lead to distension and fullness. Overeating inevitably harms the spleen; engaging in physical labor too soon after a sore heals results in emaciation and weakness (Lei Syndrome). Engaging in sexual activity too soon after recovery will shorten one's lifespan; failing to avoid wind and cold causes toxic pathogens to spread; failing to moderate one's diet leads to unbearable itching of the sores. Major sores require dietary restrictions for half a year, while minor sores require restrictions for one hundred days. This is indeed what a gentleman who understands destiny should do.
In the initial stage, if the sore has a high apex, an active base, red color, fever, swelling, and pain that gradually increase, it is a favorable prognosis (Shun). In the formed stage, if there is severe pain, thin and shiny skin, normal appetite, harmonious urination and defecation, and a warm body, it is a favorable prognosis. In the ulcerated stage, if the pus is thick and fresh-colored without odor, necrotic tissue sheds naturally, swelling subsides easily, and the body feels light, it is a favorable prognosis. After ulceration, if the pus is thick and yellow, new flesh grows easily, the wound closes easily, and appetite gradually improves, it is a favorable prognosis.
In the initial stage, if the apex is flat, the base is diffuse, the color is dull with slight swelling, there is no heat or pain, and the body feels fatigued, it is an unfavorable prognosis (Ni). In the formed stage, if the swelling is hard and purple, fails to suppurate or ulcerate, and presents only with dry mouth and irritability, it is an unfavorable prognosis. In the ulcerated stage, if the skin is rotten, the interior is hard and non-necrotic, swelling persists, pain remains unrelieved, and there is mental restlessness, it is an unfavorable prognosis. After ulceration, if the pus is clear and thin, although necrotic tissue sheds, new flesh does not grow, and the complexion is ruined with foul odor, it indicates death (Si).
In the initial stage, regardless of whether there is pain or not, whether the sore rises or not, and irrespective of Yin/Yang, Exterior/Interior patterns, or the number of days passed, if no pus is visible, moxibustion is indicated. If pain and itch are not felt after moxibustion, direct moxibustion (Ming Jiu) should be applied. If there is local swelling and heat, intermittent pain, a floating and rapid pulse, but no constipation, herbal support to expel toxins is indicated. If the body is stiff and rigid, the pulse is tight, there is aversion to cold, and the patient desires hot drinks and warmth, the pathogen is in the Exterior, and diaphoresis (sweating method) is indicated. If the swelling is hard and painful deeply, with dry mouth, constipation, fever, and a forceful pulse, the pathogen is in the Interior, and purgation (draining method) is indicated. If the pain is severe, accompanied by irritability, desire for cold drinks, dry tongue, and dry mouth, the fire toxin is in the Upper Jiao, and clearing heat is indicated. If there is swelling, pain, hardness, a back feeling heavy as if carrying a stone, nausea, and dry retching, the toxic pathogen is inside, and detoxification with drawing-out properties is indicated. If swelling and pain deepen daily, internal pus cannot exit, and necrotic tissue blocks the wound opening, urgent surgical incision and drainage are required. If the sore is soft and slow to form pus, and fails to ulcerate, this indicates deficiency of Yang Qi; strengthening the Spleen and Stomach and assisting Yang Qi is required. If the body is cool with spontaneous sweating, hands and feet are cold, the six pulses are deficient and fine, and there is diarrhea, this indicates Yang collapse; urgent warming and tonification are required.
