Maifan Shi Gao Fang (Maifan Stone Ointment Formula)
Treats back abscesses and various carbuncles/furuncles with miraculous effect. (Also known as Lujiao Gao)
Herbs: Bai Maifan Shi (Maifan Stone, yellow-white color, resembling steamed wheat bun is authentic. If unavailable, use stone from near the grinding teeth of an old mill, grind extremely fine), Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix, grind to fine powder), Lujiao (Deer Antler, do not use naturally shed ones; fresh acquisition is best, cut into 2-3 cun lengths, burn in charcoal fire until smoke ceases, grind to extremely fine powder).
First, heat Maifan Stone in charcoal fire until red, quench in good rice vinegar. Repeat this quenching process ten times, then grind to extremely fine powder. Use 2 liang of Maifan Stone powder, 2 liang of Bailian powder, and 4 liang of Deer Antler ash powder. Grind together in a mortar until silent to ensure efficacy. If not ground fine enough, application causes extreme pain. If ground fine and tender, it greatly stops pain, promotes healing, and drains pus. The difference in efficacy between fine and coarse is thus. When mixing, measure the powders, use aged good rice vinegar, boil in silver or ceramic vessel until "fish-eye" bubbles appear, then slowly add the three powders, stirring constantly with a bamboo spatula for about an hour until consistency is appropriate. Pour into a porcelain basin to cool, cover tightly with paper to prevent dust. Before use, wash pus and blood from the sore thoroughly with Pig Trotter Soup, dry with old cloth, apply ointment around the perimeter with a goose feather. Cover all red areas, leaving only a coin-sized center open for drainage of pus and heat-toxicity. If unbroken, it resolves internally; if broken, it drains pus like rushing water, showing daily contraction. For chronic sores with rotting flesh and exposed bone, apply ointment-soaked old paper; even if membrane just penetrates, it brings peace. Do not touch tender flesh with hands when washing, nor blow breath on the sore. Avoid people with axillary odor, menstruating women, or pregnant women seeing the preparation. Must use Maifan Stone and fresh Deer Antler with brain bone (though brain bone is not burned). If you carefully select and prepare herbs, results surpass other medicines. Save a bowl of good rice vinegar in a ceramic jar to moisten the dried ointment daily with a goose feather to prevent cracking. Initially change dressing daily; after ten days, every two days. Ancient texts say Maifan Stone resembling wheat bun used in mills is best; I argue against using it as a millstone, claiming mill-used stones are best confuses people. Maifan Stone looks like a rice ball with grain-like spots. If unavailable, use old millstone near teeth for its wheat nature. Tested repeatedly with success. If not sold in pharmacies, find white pebble-like stones in streams. Sizes vary, fist to bowl-sized, resembling a clump of wheat bun. (Ancient prefaces omitted).
