For those who have not yet developed consumption (Lao disease) but are on the verge of doing so, the prescription is as follows:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), one tael; Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii), five qian; Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), five qian; Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), five qian; Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), one qian; Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome), three qian; Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen).
Due to irregular eating habits (overeating or starvation) and physical overexertion, internal injury to the Righteous Qi occurs. This causes Qi to descend abnormally, impairing the Spleen and Stomach's ability to transform and transport, preventing food from being properly digested and moved. Consequently, this often evolves into Lao Zhai (consumption with wasting symptoms).
If one suspects that loss of appetite is due to Fire in the Spleen and Stomach or accumulation of meat and grains, mild cases may be treated with herbs such as Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), and Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus); severe cases... Decoct in water and take orally.
Whenever a person's Cun pulse on the right hand is larger than the Cun pulse on the left hand, it indicates an internal injury syndrome; regardless of the condition of the Guan and Chi pulses on either side, administering this formula yields miraculous effects.
If a person suffers from Yin deficiency accompanied by Spleen deficiency diarrhea that persists for years; or if they eat without digesting; or if digestion results in loose stools, the prescription is:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), five qian; Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus), five qian; Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), one tael; Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome), three qian; Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), one qian; Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex)... [text fragment] ...
This formula consists purely of Yin-nourishing herbs, with the exception of Sheng Ma, which lifts the Qi within the Yin; and warming-dampness-resolving herbs, which warm the Ming Men (Gate of Vitality) to strengthen the Spleen Earth. How could loose stools recur?
In cases where Kidney Water is deficient and exposed to Cold pathogens, or where Kidney Water is exhausted leading to night fever and daytime chills, if these syndromes are mistakenly treated as Yang syndromes, thirst will increase and heat will become more intense... [text fragment] ...foot and...
The prescription is:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), one tael; Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), five qian; Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii), three qian; Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen), three qian; Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen), one qian; Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus), five qian... This is a highly effective formula for treating Yin deficiency with hyperactive Fire.
To treat Yin cold with absence of Fire, the prescription is:
Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), one qian; Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), one qian; Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), one tael; Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), four qian; Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), three qian; Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), three qian... [text fragment] ...
These two formulas demonstrate that within the treatment of Yin, there is method for treating Yang; and within the treatment of Yang, there lies the principle of nourishing Yin.
