Formulas for Treating Shuigu Dysentery (Dysentery with Undigested Food and Water)
Shuigu dysentery arises from physical deficiency, open couli (skin pores), and deficiency of blood and qi. In spring, one is injured by wind pathogenic factors, which remain within the muscles. Later, when the spleen, stomach, large intestine, and rectum become weak, the pathogenic factors take advantage of this deficiency to invade, resulting in shuigu dysentery. The Stomach is the fu organ of the Spleen and serves as the sea of water and grain. The Spleen is the zang organ of the Stomach, and its manifestation reflects on the body's muscles. If qi is deficient, it is injured by wind pathogens that lodge between the muscles; subsequently, due to spleen and stomach qi deficiency, wind pathogens invade again taking advantage of the emptiness. If spleen qi is weak, it cannot transform water and grain, causing waste matter to fail to consolidate, thereby transforming into shuigu dysentery.
