In Spring, the taboo area is the left hypochondrium; in Autumn, the right hypochondrium; in Summer, the umbilicus; in Winter, the waist.
Additionally, men should avoid "Chu" days (Days of Removal), and women should avoid "Po" days (Days of Destruction).
Physicians who do not understand these taboos may find treatment extremely difficult when patients are undergoing periods of bad fortune or have deficient Qi and Blood. However, enlightened individuals are not bound by such rigid rules. In cases of sudden, acute illnesses, these restrictions do not apply. If a point is contraindicated for moxibustion but other treatments fail, moxibustion may be applied to Mingtang (the head region), typically one to three moxa cones (Zhuang).
