When the functions of the six fu-organs (Six Bowels) are disharmonious, carbuncles may form. For those who consume mineral drugs (Ru Shi, a type of traditional Chinese medicinal stone preparation), if lifestyle and dietary management are improper, it can cause heat qi to scatter and move internally, invading the six fu-organs. This disrupts the circulation of qi and blood in the meridians, triggering the reaction of mineral drugs and leading to carbuncle swelling. Symptoms include mental restlessness and irritability, dry mouth, stiffness and tension in the shoulders and back, and pain in the four limbs. It is appropriate to take Rhinoceros Horn Powder Formula (Xijiao San Fang).
Rhino Horn Shavings (3 fen) / Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1 liang) / Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang, cut into small pieces) / Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang) / Qi Ni (Akebiae Caulis or similar, 1 liang) / Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed) / Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, cut into small pieces) / Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, cut into small pieces).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose consists of 4 qian. Boil with one zhong of water and 37 slices of Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Strain the dregs and take warm. Three times daily.
For treating carbuncle swelling and pain caused by heat toxicity from mineral drug reactions, accompanied by dry mouth and mental oppression, it is appropriate to take Shengma Powder Formula (Shengma San Fang).
Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1 liang) / Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, cut into small pieces and lightly stir-fried) / Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus, 1 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow, pith removed) / Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1 liang) / Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang, cut into small pieces).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose consists of 4 qian. Boil with one zhong of water until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Strain the dregs and take warm. Three to four times daily, stopping when bowel movement becomes unobstructed.
For treating mineral drug reactions causing irritant heat and carbuncle swelling with pain, it is appropriate to take Xuan Shen Powder Formula (Xuan Shen San Fang).
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 2 liang) / Zi Xue (Purple Snow, a compound preparation, 2 liang) / Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1 liang) / Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 1 liang) / Rhino Horn Shavings (3 fen) / Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, cut into small pieces and lightly stir-fried) / Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 3 fen).

For treating mineral drug reactions causing red and swollen carbuncles, toxic qi attacking and penetrating, tendon and vessel stiffness, slurred speech, and mental restlessness, it is appropriate to take Du Huo Powder Formula (Du Huo San Fang).
Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 3 fen) / Han Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang) / Rhino Horn Shavings (0.5 liang) / Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 liang) / Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 3 fen) / Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 fen) / Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1 liang, cut into small pieces).
