Cough accompanied by hoarseness or aphonia is caused by wind-cold pathogenic factors injuring the Lung. The Lung governs Qi, and the Qi of the Five Zang organs is all directed by the Lung. Each of the Five Zang organs corresponds to one of the five vocal sounds, which all rely on the propulsion and circulation of Qi.
For treating cough with rebellious Qi ascending, panting, urgency, and hoarseness or aphonia, it is appropriate to take Beimu San (Fritillaria Powder).
Herbs: Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 1 liang, roasted until slightly yellow), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, 3 qian, roots and soil removed), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1.5 liang, heart removed and dried), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 3 qian), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 3 qian, skin and tips removed, double-kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 2 qian (or 3 qian) per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, decoct until 6 fen remains, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Administer three times daily.
For treating cough resulting in inability to produce voice, it is appropriate to take Guixin San (Cinnamon Heart Powder).
Herbs: Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 3 qian), Helilepi (Pericarpium Chebulae, 3 qian), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 3 qian, processed until cracked and cut into pieces), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 0.5 liang, radix part removed), Chifuling (Poria cum Radice Pini, 0.5 lian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 fen, honey-roasted until slightly red).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan of water and 2 jujubes, decoct until 6 fen remains, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Administer three times daily.
For treating cough, aphonia, and inability to speak, it is appropriate to take Xingren Jian (Apricot Kernel Decoction/Paste).
Herbs: Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 2 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow and ground into paste), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, 1 liang, roots and soil removed), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 1 liang), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 1 liang, roots and soil removed), Baimi (Mel, 3 liang).
The above herbs are crushed, sieved, and made into fine powder. Take 1 da zhan (approx. 200ml) of cow's milk, add fresh ginger juice and rock sugar, decoct together until proper consistency is reached. Then add honey, and simmer over low heat until it forms a paste.
For treating lung-heat cough with inability to produce voice, it is appropriate to take Tiandongjian (Asparagus Root Paste).
