Heart and abdominal distension (Xinfu Guzhang) is caused by disharmony of Yin and Yang, weakness of the Zang and Fu organs, and the presence of wind-pathogenic cold qi in the abdomen. This cold qi contends with the Qi of the internal organs. The Zang organs belong to Yin, and the Fu organs belong to Yang; when Qi stagnates, it leads to obstruction.
For treating heart and abdominal distension accompanied by shortness of breath and dryness/obstruction of urination and defecation, use Mutong San (Wood Vetch Decoction Powder):
Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, cut into pieces), Chifuling (Polyporus), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sanggenbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, cut into pieces), Baiwei (Cynanchi Stauntonii Radix), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, remove the rhizome head), Yuliren (Pruni Semen, soak in hot water and remove the skin).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to six-tenths, strain, and take warm before meals. After taking the medicine, walking for about ten li should induce defecation.
For treating heart and abdominal distension accompanied by panting, urgency to breathe, and loss of appetite, use Taoren San (Peach Kernel Decoction Powder):
Taoren (Persicae Semen, 1 liang, soak in hot water, remove skin and pointed ends, remove double-kernel varieties, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow), Sanggenbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, 1 liang), Chifuling (Polyporus, 1 liang), Binglang (Arecae Semen, 1 liang), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water and half a fen of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to six-tenths, strain, and take warm at any time.
For treating heart and abdominal distension where there is retained fluid in the abdomen extending to both hypochondria, causing chest tightness, urgent Qi rushing to the heart, and inability to sit or lie comfortably, use Yuliren Wan (Pruni Semen Pill):
Yuliren (Pruni Semen, 1 liang, soak in hot water, remove skin, stir-fry slightly), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 1 liang, soak in hot water, remove skin and pointed ends, remove double-kernel varieties, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow), Qianniuzi (Pharbitidis Semen, 1 liang, stir-fry slightly), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang, soak in hot water, remove white pith, bake), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 1 liang), Chifuling (Polyporus, 1 liang), Zeqi (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Herba, 1 liang).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted into fine powder, mixed with refined honey, and pounded three to two hundred times. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take five pills each time, empty-stomached in the morning and before evening meal, with ginger-infused water.
For treating heart and abdominal distension with constipation of the intestines and stomach, panting, and loss of appetite, use Yuanhua Wan (Kadsurea Flower Pill):
Yuanhua (Daphnes Genkwa Flos, 0.5 liang, mix with vinegar and stir-fry until dry), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, cut into pieces, stir-fry slightly), Tiantingli (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, 0.5 liang, stir-fry between papers until purple), Gansui (Kansui Radix, 0.5 liang).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted into fine powder, mixed with refined honey, and pounded over a hundred times. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take five pills each time, empty-stomached in the morning and before evening meal, with warm water.
For treating heart and abdominal distension with hardness and pain in the epigastrium, use Biejia Wan (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum Pill):
Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 1 liang, coat with vinegar, roast until yellow, remove skirt edges), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 0.5 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, remove the rhizome head), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 1 liang, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow, remove pith), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang).
