The mouth serves as the external manifestation of the Spleen; if there is accumulated heat within this Zang-organ, body fluids (Jin-Ye) become depleted, thereby causing dryness of the mouth.
For treating dry mouth and irritability associated with febrile diseases, the Lu Gen San (Reed Rhizome Powder) formula is indicated.
Ingredients: Radix Imperatae (Lugen, 2 liang, cut), Cortex Lycii (Digupi, 1 liang), Radix Imperatae (Maogen, 1 liang, cut), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, 3 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and cut), Radix Puerariae (Gegen, 1 liang, cut), Radix Ophiopogonis (Maimendong, 1.5 liang, heart removed and dried), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin, 1 liang), Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Chuan Shengma, 1 liang).
