Tum Jie Shi (Phlegm Solidification Syndrome) arises from the accumulation of phlegm-fluids and water-dampness in the chest and viscera. When these accumulate, they contend with cold or heat qi, leading to solidification that is difficult to dissipate. Consequently, this causes epigastric and abdominal fullness and obstruction, impaired breathing, dizziness, blurred vision, and a constant desire to vomit or regurgitate; hence it is termed Tum Jie Shi.
For treating old phlegm solidified in the chest, accompanied by reduced appetite, alternating chills and fever, and reluctance to rise from bed, use Qianhu San (Peucedanum Powder).
Qian Hu (Radix Peucedani, 1 liang, remove rhizome) Xuan Fu Hua (Flos Inulae, 0.5 liang) Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 0.5 liang) Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang, remove rhizome) Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang, cut into pieces, lightly stir-fried)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 da zhen (approx. 200ml) of water and 0.5 fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until the volume reduces to 0.5 zhen. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating phlegm-solidification causing stagnation in the chest and heart, constant nausea/regurgitation, and inability to eat, this formula is suitable.
Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 1 liang, wash seven times with hot water to remove acridity) Yu Li Ren (Semen Pruni, 1 liang, soak in hot water, remove skin, lightly stir-fried) Xuan Fu Hua (Flos Inulae, 0.5 liang) Qian Hu (Radix Peucedani, 1 liang, remove rhizome) Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi, 0.5 liang, remove rhizome) Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii, 0.5 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, remove pith)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhen (approx. 150ml) of water and 0.5 fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until the volume reduces to 0.6 zhen. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating phlegm-solidification with intermittent chills and fever, and chest/heart fullness and oppression, use this emetic formula to expel phlegm.
Gua Di (Fructus Momordicae, 30 pieces) Chi Xiao Dou (Semen Phaseoli, 20 pieces, stir-fried until cooked) Ren Shen Lu Tou (Rhizome of Radix Ginseng, 1 fen) Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 fen, raw and cut)
Grind and sieve the above herbs finely into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose at any time, mixed with warm wine. Take three times daily. Stop when vomiting occurs.
For treating phlegm-excess that fails to dissipate, with aversion to food and nausea, use Ban Xia Wan (Pinellia Pill).
Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 2 liang, wash seven times with hot water to remove acridity) Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis, 1 liang, processed until cracked and cut) Bai Fan (Alumen, 1 liang, calcined until liquid evaporates) Cao Dou Kou (Semen Cardamomi Tsaoko, 1 liang, remove skin)

Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 5 liang) Zao Jiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis, 5 pods, broken)
Place the above herbs together in a large cauldron. Boil in water for one day. Remove the Zao Jiao, retaining only the Ban Xia. Dry thoroughly, grind finely through a sieve into a powder. Add 1 xiao zhen of water and 1 xiao zhen of wine. Decoct until the volume reaches 1 zhong zhen. Take warm with the dregs at any time. If the patient walks for one or two li, expectoration of phlegm-saliva indicates efficacy.
