The Kidney Qi connects with the ears. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is the gathering point of many vessels. Labor and fatigue deplete the meridian blood and qi, leading to insufficiency of blood and qi, which causes the vessels to become empty. Pathogenic wind takes advantage of this deficiency, enters the ear along the vessels, and clashes with the body's righteous qi, thus causing tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Upon diagnosing the Cun Kou pulse (Radial artery at the wrist) on the right hand: a floating pulse indicates Yang, corresponding to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian; a deep pulse indicates Yin, corresponding to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. If both Yin and Yang pulses are deficient, this signifies damage to blood and qi and insufficiency of the vessels. The patient suffers from noisy tinnitus. If pathogenic excess consumes body fluids, it leads to deficiency of the Bladder. Persistent tinnitus may eventually develop into deafness.
